The Bible is God's Word

The Five Witnesses of the Bible

I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, infallible, and the supreme and final authority for all faith and life. "All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for conviction, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" - II Timothy 3:16

A) FIRST WITNESS - many people believe the Bible is the Word of God

Over a lifetime of use, over the lifetimes of my ancestors, over the lifetimes of my brothers and sisters in Christ, over the lifetimes of billions of Christians the Bible has proved itself to be a reliable guide to all necessary spiritual truth. Most people who believe there is just one God believe He speaks at least in some part of the Bible - Christians, Jews, and Moslems (who claim to be the descendants of Abraham.) This has been true throughout history. That is currently about 3 Billion worldwide. That is our testimony to you. However, the scriptures themselves require more.

Deuteronomy 19:15says that two or three witnesses are required for a convincing testimony. I have just mentioned billions. However, because of the nature of this argument, I only count it as one. Besides our own testimony of the experience we have had with His word we have other evidence to offer, other witnesses to call. According to Matthew 24:35 God's Word will never end. SECOND WITNESS - the Bible is everything you would expect from the Word of God

Since God made man it is not unreasonable to expect that He would want to communicate with men. A book would be a good choice since it would be relatively permanent and fairly stable. But if God wrote the book it would have to be a very special book. It would have to meet at least four criteria:

A) It would have to claim that it was from God.

B) It would have to promote the highest standards of morality.

C) It would have to have something very important to say.

D) It would have to be widely available over a long period of time

Our 2nd witness is that the Bible is the Word of God because it satisfies all 4 of these criteria.

(B) The Bible does claim to be the word of God.

Many of the books of the Bible start with something that clearly says that God is the source of the contents of that book. In Leviticus 1:1-2 it is the LORD who told Moses what to say. In Isaiah 1:1-2 it is the LORD who spoke. In Revelation 1:1-3 we find it is God by way of an angel who is the source of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Other books in the Bible make the similar claims although not always in the same words. They claim historical accuracy and truthfulness and then talk about what God did and/or said. For instance in Luke 1:1-4 he claims to be writing the truth based on the testimony of other witnesses.

(See also 1 Corinthians 14:37; 1 Thessalonians 4:15; 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Peter 1:16-21; 2 Samuel 23:2; 2 Timothy 3:16; Acts 4:24-25; Acts 28:25; Ephesians 3:3-5; Exodus 4:12; Exodus 24:3-4; Ezekiel 1:3; Ezekiel 3:4; Hosea 1:1-2; Isaiah 51:16; Isaiah 59:21; Jeremiah 1:4-9; Jeremiah 10:1-2; Jeremiah 30:1-4; Jeremiah 36:1-4; Jonah 1:1; Luke 8:11; Matthew 10:19-20; Micah 1:1; Rev 19:9; Romans 3:1-2; Zechariah. 1:1; Zechariah. 7:12)

The declaration, "Thus saith the LORD," or "Hear the Word of the LORD," or "The LORD spake saying," appears over 3,000 times in the Bible.

(C) The Bible promotes the highest standards of morality.

In Exodus Chapter 20:1-17 we find the Ten Commandments. According to Mark 12:28-31 we are to love God and our neighbors. In Matthew 7:12, we find the Golden Rule. Matthew calls it the Law and the Prophets summed up. Are there any higher standards or righteousness than these?

In Psalm 12:6 God's word is compared to silver purified seven times. (See also I Corinthians 2:9-13)

(D) The Bible has many things very important to say to us.

According to John 10:10 He came that we might have life. According to Romans 15:4 the Bible was written that we might have hope. I believe anyone would concede that life and hope are very important matters.

Percents of languages not yet translated

(E) The Bible is the most widely available book in the world.

All or portions have been translated into over three thousand languages. The Bible typically sells over 100 million copies every year making it the best seller on any list. This is because it is the book of God's communication to man. People all over the world now have an opportunity to read it and to know God.

(F) THIRD WITNESS - Fulfilled Prophecy

In Deuteronomy 18:18-22 we find that we can tell that a prophet is false if what he predicts does not come to pass. (See also Jeremiah 28:9) In Deuteronomy 13:1-4 we find that true prophets should also not encourage us not to rebel against God. This means that simply accurately predicting the future is not sufficient to be considered God's oracle. The prophet must also promote obedience to God.

There are over 2,000 specific prophecies in the Bible which have already been fulfilled. This is particularly astounding when we recall that there are no such prophecies in the ‘scriptures’ of any other religion…For example, the writings of Buddha are totally lacking in any sort of specific predictive prophecy about the things of the future. In the writings of Confucius, there is absolutely nothing of any predictive prophecies. In the case of the Koran, the scriptures of the Muslims, we find only the prophecy of Mohammed that he would return to Mecca, a ‘self-fulfilling prophecy,’ which he himself, of course, fulfilled. This is quite different from the prophecy of Christ, who said that he would rise from the dead. And that is just one of thousands of prophecies that occur in the Scriptures and which are of the most specific, concrete, and definite nature.

Below are a few specific examples. In some cases you will have to read several verses before to find out who or what is being talked about.

Deuteronomy 28:64

The people of Israel would be scattered worldwide. By 70 A.D. Jewish communities existed in the Middle East and on the Mediterranean coasts. Jews followed the Romans into Europe and from Persia and Babylonia spread as far east as China. In modern times, Jews have migrated to the rest of the world. Despite the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, the vast majority of the Jewish people remain scattered around the world.

Amos 9:14-15

Jacob's descendants would regain control of Israel. This prophet lived about 2700 years ago, during a time when the people of Israel were being forced out of their homeland by a succession of foreign invasions. Despite many centuries of exile, many Jews returned to Israel and in 1948 reclaimed sovereignty over a portion of their ancient homeland.

Isaiah 14:23

The Messiah would be silent before his accusers. 700 years later, as explained in Matthew 27:12-14, this is what happened to Jesus. He was falsely accused but remained silent and did not protest the accusations.

Isaiah 53:7

Babylon, which had been a world power at two different times in history, would be reduced to swampland. After Cyrus conquered it in 539 BC, it never again rose to power. Archaeologists excavated Babylon during the 1800s. Some parts of the city could not be dug up because they were under a water table that had risen over the years.

Deuteronomy 28:64-67

The Jews would be persecuted in the lands where they were scattered. The Jews were intensely persecuted in Europe and Russia during the Crusades and Pogroms of the Middle Ages. Wherever they lived under Muslim rule they have been intensely persecuted. During the Holocaust of World War II, the Nazis killed about one-third of the world’s population of Jews.

Deuteronomy 29:23

Israel would become a wasteland. Mark Twain wrote this, in 1867, about the land of Israel, which at the time was called Palestine: "Palestine sits in sackcloth and ashes… the spell of a curse that has withered its fields and fettered its energies… Palestine is desolate and unlovely… It is a hopeless, dreary, heartbroken land."

Isaiah 41:18-20

Trees would flourish again in a desolate Israel. In Israel they have constructed a vast irrigation system to improve farming. During the past century, more than 200 million trees have been planted in Israel.

Zechariah 9:9

The prophet speaks of a future king presenting himself to Jerusalem while riding on a humble donkey. 500 years later, as explained in Luke 19:35-37, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and presented Himself as the Messiah, the King.

Ezekiel 26:12

You have to read above in verses 4 and 7

Tyre's stones, timber and soil would be thrown into the sea. Alexander the Great attacked Tyre in 333-332 BC. He took the rubble from Tyre's mainland ruins and tossed it - stones, timber and soil - into the sea, to build the land bridge to the part that was on an island off shore. The bridge is still there to this day.

Also consider the nation of Edom, Esau's descendants. Edom was overthrown as a nation, the nation and city have become a desolation, as Ezekiel 25:13; Ezekiel 35:4,7 and Isaiah 34:11-13 predicted hundreds of years before. It has never been populated again as Jeremiah 49:18 predicted thousands of years ago. Edom had a bloody history as Ezekiel 25:13 and 35:6,8 predicted. Edom became populated with wild animals and birds (instead of people) as Isaiah 34:11, 13-15 predicted thousands of years ago. Beside a few nomads passing through, archeologists, and tourists visiting the ruins of Petra, which no reasonable person would call populated, it is deserted.

FOURTH WITNESS - the Bible is consistent, within itself and with other known truth

(G) The Bible is consistent, within itself

"So what?" you may ask, "Most books do not contradict themselves." The various books which make up the Bible were written in a three different languages, on three different continents, by over forty writers with very different backgrounds, (king, fisherman, poet, doctor, government official, teacher, prophets, all sorts of people) over a period of over sixteen hundred years. Many of the New Testament books were written without the writer knowing about the others. And yet it has a common theme, a logical sequence, and a consistent message. Although the Bible was written by so many men, all of them were led by the Spirit of the One God.

According to 2 Peter 1:21 prophesies do not come by man's choice. According to Hebrews 1:1-2 God spoke in various ways through the prophets. In Hebrews 6:18 we see it is impossible for God lie. According to John 17:1 & 17:17 the word of the Lord is the truth. (Also see Titus 1:2, John 10:35; Psalm 119:43; Psalm 19:7-9)

(H) The Bible is also consistent with science.

The purpose here is not to explain what a great science text the Bible is, (it is not), but rather to show that it is consistent with scientific facts. There are some so-called scientific theories that disagree with the Bible but there are no known scientific facts that contradict the Bible. Here are a few scientific concepts and the scriptures that agree with them. Many of them were listed in the Bible hundreds or even thousands of years before being recorded elsewhere or "discovered" by modern science. These are not stated in the technical jargon of modern science, of course, but in terms of the basic world of man's everyday experience; nevertheless, they are completely in accord with the most modern scientific facts:

The description of Behemoth in Job 40:15-24 matches what paleontologists call a Brachiosaurus.

Ecclesiastes 1:4-7

Describes the motion of the winds long before the advent of modern meteorology.

Hebrews 1:11-12

Describes the wearing down of the creation (The second law of thermodynamics)

Isaiah 55:9

Describes the almost infinite extent of the universe beyond our solar system.

2 Peter 3:7 & Psalm 102:25-27

Is similar to the law of increasing entropy & the law of conservation of mass and energy

Jeremiah 33:22

Only about 3,000 stars can be seen with the naked eye and therefore could have been counted even in ancient times and yet the writers at the time seemed to know what scientists did not know until the invention of the telescope thousands of years later.

I Corinthians 15:41

Modern astronomy has shown that no two stars are identical which is a fact that is not obvious without a telescope and sophisticated light measuring technology.

Job 26:7

The Earth floats through space resting on nothing at all. This fact was not "discovered" by science until the fourteenth century.

Job 28:25

About four hundred years ago science "discovered" that air has weight.

Genesis 7:11

Hot water fountains or springs are found deep in the ocean and are a recent discovery

(I) The Bible is also consistent with history and archaeology.

Much of the Bible, particularly the Old Testament, contains verifiable historical facts. All those kings names, nations, and wars it records matches the written, historical, and archeological facts that are known from other sources. There have been accusations in the past that certain archeological evidence contradicted the Bible but in every case when they dug a little deeper the Bible turned out to be true. Consider the case of Lot's door. Two angels were sent to rescue the nephew of Abraham from the coming destruction of Sodom inGenesis 19:1-17. In the story a door is shut twice.

Archeologists began to question the validity of this account in the 1800's. They could find no evidence of houses in those times that had doors. What it says in verse 9 makes it clear that it was not just talking about a curtain over an open doorway. They believed doors that could be shut were introduced much later in time and therefore the account could not be true. As time went by, however, they dug deeper into the ruins of ancient cities. They discovered something they never expected. Very old houses did have doors that could be shut. For some reason doors that could shut went out of fashion for several hundred years and then came back into fashion. Educated people are a little more hesitant to categorically deny the historical accuracy of the Bible anymore, at least, the parts after Genesis chapter 11. Time after time the Bible has been found to be right.

"If I were asked the question, 'Should be Bible Be Used as a Textbook of History?' my reply, emphatic, salvific, and assured, would resound: 'There is none better!' " - Lael Othniel Caesar in Examining Validity: The Bible As Text Of History at www.aiias.edu/ict/vol_16/16cc_001-019.htm

(J) FIFTH WITNESS - The Holy Spirit

The effect that we have seen over and over again of Bible reading on people's lives testifies to its power from God. All of the above reasons may be convincing, but here is one you can test for yourself without spending hours in the library researching scientific and historical facts to compare with the Bible's historical and prophetic writings. In Isaiah 55:10-11 we find that God's word accomplishes His will. In Hebrews 4:12 the Bible is compared with a very sharp swrord. Test this for yourself. Read the Bible for 15 or 20 minutes every day. If you have a heart willing the obey Him the power of God will change your life.

(See also 1 Thessalonians 2:13, Psalm 119:97-101, Psalm 1, Psalm 19:7-8)

(K) By the Bible we mean the 66 books normally accepted by Protestant Christians.

Some Bibles versions contain some additional books between the Old and New Testaments called the apocrypha. The apocrypha is not included in our idea of the Bible because it seldom, if ever, claims to be God's word and because it is seldom, if ever, quoted by Jesus or the Apostles.

Greek Text

(L) If pressed we defend the Bible in the original autographs rather than various English versions.

There are a few old Greek texts of the New Testament that do not agree with each other in all details. There are even fewer ancient Hebrew texts of the Old Testament that do not agree with each other. What the above statement means is we believe there are no significant Christian doctrines that are affected by these "textual" difficulties.
