Ann Elizabeth Whitfield Moore

(1814 - 1907)

Annie Eliza Whitfield was born March 15, 1814 and died March 22, 1907.
She was the daughter of   John Wesley Whitfield.

Hester F Moore, born 1803 in Granville Co., NC; died Abt. 1854 in Granville Co., NC. married Ann Elizabeth 'Eliza' Whitfield  November 03, 1834 in Granville Co., NC.

Children of Hester Moore and Ann Whitfield are:

i. Celestia Ann H P Moore, born November 10, 1835 in Granville Co., NC; died 1893 in Granville Co., NC; married (1) William Moore Whitaker December 10, 1855 in Granville Co., NC; married (2) Nathaniel Marvin Bishop November 17, 1869 in Granville Co., NC.

ii. John Wesley Moore, born July 17, 1837 in Granville Co., NC; died Abt. 1863 according to one source but according to North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865. Pages 184, 192 [NC Archives]:
"MOORE, JOHN W., Private Resided in Granville County where he enlisted at age 26, February 3, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for through December, 1864: however, he was reported absent sick or absent on furlough during most of that period. {May have been wounded at or near Wilderness, Virginia, on or about May 5, 1864}." The name, age and enlistment location makes it seem likely that this John is Hester Moore and Ann Eliza's son even though the death date does not match.

iii. William A Moore, born June 10, 1839 in Granville Co., NC; died Abt. 1863. According to North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865. Pages 184, 192 [NC Archives]:
"MOORE, WILLIAM A., Private Born in Granville County where he resided as as farmer prior to enlisting in Granville County at age 22, June 5 1861. OPresent or accounted for until he died in hospital at Culpeper, Virginia, October 17, 1861, of "typhoid fever." Since the name, age, enlistment location and death information all match it seems highly probable that this William is Hester Moore and Ann Eliza's son.

iv. George N Moore, born April 12, 1841 in Granville Co., NC; died in KY according to one source but according to North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865. Pages 184, 192 [NC Archives]:
"MOORE, GEORGE N., Private Resided in Granville County where he enlisted at age 21, May 14, 1862, for the war. Reported absent without leave during September-December, 1862. Returned to duty in January-February, 1863. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Lynchburg, Virginia, December 13, 1863, of "diarrhea chronic." The name, age and enlistment location makes it seem likely that this George is Hester Moore and Ann Eliza's son even though the death location does not match.

v. Martha Moore, born Abt. 1842 in Granville Co., NC; died Abt. 1842 in Granville Co., NC.

vi. Sarah Moore, born Abt. 1844 in Granville Co., NC; died Abt. 1844 in Granville Co., NC.

vii. Henry Flavious Moore, born June 27, 1847 in Granville Co., NC; died October 24, 1924 in Stem, Granville Co., NC; married (1) Leanna Stem 1870 in Granville Co., NC; married (2) Louetta Adelaide 'Etta' Clark 1880 in Granville Co., NC.

viii. Emma Moore, born Abt. 1848 in Granville Co., NC; married John Moize.

ix. Mary Louise Moore, born 1849 in Granville Co., NC; married David Nelson Parrish December 25, 1867 in Granville Co., NC.

Copies of two published obituaries for Ann E. Moore follow. Source - Ann Jordan [jordy@tc.umn.edu] Before reading them consider this -- Ann E. Moore lost two daughters when they were babies. She was widowed with the remaining seven children at the age of 40. Shortly afterwards her oldest daughter was married. Apparently she lost her three oldest sons in the War Between the States. She survived all of her children save one. Now, as you read the obituaries ask yourself if you could have left the kind of impression she did if you had undergone her trials. Thursday, April 25, 1907
Moore.--Sister Annie E. Moore (nee Whitfield) was born in Franklin County, N. C., March 15, 1814, and died at the home of her son, near Stem, in Granville County, N. C., March 22, 1907. At the tender age of twelve years she gave her young heart to God and joined the Methodist Church at Wesley's Chapel (now in the bounds of Franklinton Circuit), and remained a member of this church till she married and moved to Granville County, at which time she transferred her membership to Moore's Church, then on the Oxford, afterwards Granville, Circuit, and here she continued a consistent, consecrated member till called to join the Church Triumphant. In November, 1834, she was happily married to Mr. Hester Moore, and to this union were born four sons and five daughters, eight of whom together with her husband preceded her to the better land. Sister Moore was a very remarkable woman. 'Being a sincere worshiper and true follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, her life was a constant exhibition of the power of saving faith. At the death of her husband she erected a family altar, around which she would gather her children night and morning and consecrate them to God. The Bible was her constant companion, and she daily strove to live up to its requirements, and guided by its teachings she was faithful in every relation of life which she was called to fill. She loved her church and did all in her power to advance her interests. She was a faithful companion and mother, and was untiring in her efforts to make home cheerful and happy. I was her pastor for four years, and always found her ready and waiting the suinmois of her Lord. At her own request the writer preached her funeral from II Cor. 13:11, to a large concourse of relatives, friends and acquaintances, after which :we buried her In the cemetery at Stem, N. C. She leaves one son, H. F. Moore, a goodly number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends to mourn their loss; but we feel satisfied that our loss is her eternal gain. May the God of all grace sustain and comfort the bereaved, and help them all so to live that they can meet her in heaven.

Aged Lady at Rest.

Ann E. Moore, probably the oldest lady in Granville, died at the home of her son, Mr. H. F. Moore near Stem, last Friday at the ripe old age of 94. Up to about a year ago she was quite active and enjoyed the companionship of her neighbors and friends. She was a consecrated membor of the Methodist church, becoming a member in early life, and a true follower of the meek and lowly Nazarene. "God touched him with His finger, and he slept," the poet wrote. So may we say of this dear life--"God touched her with his finger, and she slept," but not until a beautiful life was lived. A noble example of patience, fidelity to truth and faith were given. Not until visions of a heavenly life, in Christ Jesus, had cheered, and illumined the valley of shadow. And now, that she sleeps, memory takes up the arp of life, and smiting the strings, finds that her virtues melt into music. So it ever is, when a life is nobly and dively lived.

These names were apparently written by their mother's hand in her Bible. It also has the birthdates as given above. It was taken from a fragment so we are not certain they were written by Ann E. or that they were even in a Bible but it is a pretty good guess.

Jim Moore took this picture from an oil picture that was hanging in the home of Emma and Boyd in Chapel Hill, NC.
