Dear Trish,
Sorry I can't help you, I have very little information on the Swallows family other than rumors.  My third great grandmother was Mahala Swallows, who was the illegitamite daughter of Jemima Swallows.  Mahala had siblings but I have been unable to find out their names ( one of the rumors is that two of her sisters ran a house of ill repute after or during the Cival War, and someone has told me there are records of this in the Overton Co.., courthouse).  Mahala's daughter Celina had seven children all with different fathers and was never married, she too appears and disappears on census lists.  Mahala was born abt. 1814 and I do have a list of all her children, but your Rosanne could have been a cousin or niece to her, Ijust don't have that information at this time.  Sorry.

Terry

Subject: Swallows

Trish,
Andrew Swallow (no final s on any of his papers) was born 17 Apr 1760 in Berks Co,PA and fought in the REV WAR (proven Daughters of the Revolution) and married Catherine Kinder in Wythe Co, VA in 1785. They moved into east TN
then into Overton Co about 1808-10 (land records). They are supposed to be buried in the Roaring River Cemetery which is located near their homeplace. They do have at least 1 daughter buried in this cemetery, Mary Magdeline "Polly" Swallow West.

One of the daughters of Andrew and Catherine Kinder Swallow was Jemima who was born 1800 and she had several illigitimate children. Joe C. might belong to her? Illigitimacy seems to run in this family as there are several instances of this for the next 100 years (I descend from Swallows through both of my parents and my mother's side has 2 generations of illigitimacy). I have had a hard time piecing this all together but finally succeeded in doing so after camping out in the
courthouse until I found the proof I needed.

History

Organized November 24, 1863, under Colonel Robert W. Ratliff, it moved into Kentucky. In May, 1864, it joined General Burbridge's raid on Saltville and afterwards returned in pursuit of John Morgan, and engaged him successfully at Mt. Sterling and Cynthiana. In September it made another raid upon Saltville, and again in November passed Cumberland Gap under Generals Burbridge and Stoneman, driving the Rebels before them. The salt works, foundries and immense stores were destroyed. In the spring of 1865 it joined Stoneman's celebrated raid into Virginia and North Carolina, releasing Union prisoners at Salisbury and cutting the railroads in all directions. After Lee's surrender it aided in the capture of Jeff Davis, and moving through South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, captured Generals Bragg and Wheeler with their escorts. It finally rendezvoused at Nashville and was mustered out November 14, 1865.

I also had a relative in the 12th Ohio Cav.  I live in Columbus, Ohio. I
have learned some things abvout the 12th.  Orange Sells was Captain of Co.
D., 12th O.V.C.  He is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery , Section R.   There is
a book about Champ Ferguson by Thurman Sensing  that contains testimony
from Capt. Sells.  Champ was a desperate Confederate guerilla, often
pursued by the 12th O.V.C.  Company D was Orange Sells company and came
mostly from areas near Hilliard, Ohio.  Up on Lake Erie was a P.O.W. camp
for Rebs.  It is an island, Johnsons Island, neat Sandusky and near Cedar
Point.   In Nov. of 1863 there was info that a plot to free the
prisoners. There is a book, Rebels on Lake Erie, that gives info on Johnsons
Island.   Companies A, C, D, F, and I were sent to the island in a sleet
storm without tents ! " There were no tents or other camp equipage on the
island, not even adequate cooking untensils, and from their warm snug
barracks in Cleveland the men were ushered without preparationto a bivouac
in the open air upon the frosty ground."
Have to go now but look forward to hearing from you if you want to hear
more about the 12th-Brent Nimmo

Notes for William Buckingham:
William, with his brothers Thomas L. and Peter T. Buckingham and his brother-in-law Isaac Jackson enlisted in the Confederate Army at Hartsville, Sumner County, Tennessee 19th Oct. 1861. William was assigned to Barksdale's Company Seventh Bn. Bennett's Tennessee Calvary. William was captured by the Union force in Smith County, Tennessee 17 Nov. 1862. He was trying to go home to visit his family when he was captured. He was sent to Louisville, Kentucky and from there to Vicksburg, Miss. by way of Cairo, Ill. to be exchanged for a prisoner held by the Confederate forces. This journey was made on the steamboat Mary Crane, 29th November 1862.

William Buckingham was described as age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., blue eyes, red hair and beard with a light complexion. After the war he was a mail rider by profession; he carried the mail from Pryor Carter Post Office located on Carter Branch in the southern edge of Macon county. There is a bluff on Big Goose Creek called Buckingham Bluff, where he would feed his horse. He also carried the mail in Trousdale and part of Wilson county. I was told by neighbors who remembered my grandfather Buckingham how he would accommodate the people on his mail route by delivering things for them that had nothing to do with the U.S. Mail.

William Buckingham moved to the homeplace on Thompson lane and  lived there until 1903 when he moved to Nashville, Tennessee. William bought the interest of his brothers in their father's estate in 1890 for the sum of fifty dollars.

William Buckingham left Trousdale county and moved to Nashville, Tennessee about Feb. 1903. He died about three months later on 27 April 1903 at his home 1012 Cheatham Street. William and Matilda are buried in Nashville's Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Zach while living and raising tobacco in Logan Co.,KY would bring his crop down to Springfield, Robertson County, TN to sell at the big tobacco warehouses.  One year after selling his crop and returning  home in his wagon with the cash, two men passed him on the road going north.  They went a ways on up the road and then turned their horses around and headed back toward Zach.  Zach being suspicious leaned forward on the wagon seat and reached his arm down under the seat pretending to be reaching for a gun, when in fact he was not carrying one.  The two men stopped along side the wagon and asked Zach if he had gotten a good price for his tobacco.  Zach replied 'fair' and 'that he needed to get on home'.  The two men seeing Zach's hand and arm extended under the seat thought better of robbing him and moved off down the road returning to Springfield where they had come.
