Trisha,

I saw your posting on the STARNES Family Genealogy Forum regarding Andrew
STARNES, who married Catherine SHERRILL, and had at least one son, Charles
STARNES, who (1) was born on April 6, 1817; (2) lived in DeKalb County, TN
and (3) died on February 18, 1893.

When I saw your posting regarding Andrew STARNES, I immediately thought of
my grandfather, Colonel [his name, not his title] Andrew STARNES/STARNS,
who was on born September 11, 1873 in Meigs County, TN.

My most remote known ancestor was Colonel Andrew's father, James Henry
STARNES, Sr., who (1) was born in about 1839 in TN; (2) went by his middle
name of Henry; (3) married Narcissus JOHNS on January 13, 1861 in Meigs
County, TN; (4) had five children--(a) Wilma, (b) Samantha, (c) James
Henry, Jr., (d) Colonel Andrew [my grandfather], and (e) Stanton; and (5)
died on February 10, 1887 in Birchwood, James [now Hamilton] County, TN.

My grandfather, Colonel Andrew STARNS, and his brother, Stanton STARNS,
moved to OK, where my mother and I were born.

My efforts to trace my STARNES family have been hampered by the fact that
the family surname was spelled both STARNES and STARNS, and many of the
family members went by their middle names. [The tendency of family members
to go by their middle names suggests that they may have been ethnic
Germans.] [By the way, I, too, go by my middle name.]

Do we have a connection?

Trisha,

I just looked at Starnes, H. Gerald and Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a
Name Behind, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, MD: 1983, p. 694, and found the
following summary of the 1850 census of Smith County, TN:

Charles Starnes, 36, Nancy, 35 (both born in Tenn.), William, 14, Jeramiah,10,
Burket, 5, Manda, 4.

Frederick Starnes, 38, Mary, 39 (both born in Tenn.), Martha, 14, John, 11,
William, 8, Jacob, 7, Joseph, 6.

Henry Starnes, 40, Delila, 38 (both born in Tenn.), Sarah, 19, Charles, 15,
John, 8; Ladina, 4, Catherine, 78 [this appears to me to have been Andrew
STARNES' widow, Catherine (SHERRILL) STARNES].

John Starnes, 24, Leatha, 28 (born in Tenn. & N.C.), Elizabeth, 6, Meter, 5,
David, 2.

It appears to me that Frederick STARNES and Henry STARNES could have been
children of Andrew STARNES; however, Frederick and Henry were not in the
family group sheet that you sent to me.

I thought I would send this information to you, just in case you didn't already have it.

Mike,

Although my family that descends from the Starnes line didn't go by their
middle names we did have one thing that points to German heritage.  We all
called my great grandfather "Opa", which is grandfather in German or Dutch.
My grandmother told me we were from 'Dutch' heritage.  Of course she may
have meant 'Deutsch'.

Trisha,

As you may know, the STARNES' precursors, the STARING family, emigrated
from the German Palatinate to NY by way of the Netherlands, so I suppose
that they could be called "Dutch." Also, the STARNES' precursors went from
NY to VA via PA, so they could be called "Pennsylvania Dutch."

My mother-in-law, who was a PFEIFFER, told me that she was of Dutch
ancestry, yet when I researched her ancestors, I leared that they were
"Pennsylvania Dutch," or Germans.

Then, too, during and after World War II, some people were reluctant to
admit that they were ethnic Germans.

Subject: Andrew Starnes and Catherine Sherrill

Dear Trisha Carden:

I am a descendent of Andrew Starnes and Catherine Sherill now living in San
Antonio, Texas. I was born in Gordensville (Smith) Tennessee. For the names
of Andrew's other children, go to http://www.starnesfamily.org/Unplaced.htm
Andrew is the fourth person listed in the "Unplaced Members of the Frederick
Starnes I Family" article.  It also lists five children.

My family line goes Andrew/Charles/Jeremiah/Shela/Alva and then me.  Most of
the information that I have goes no further forward than Andrew.  Our family
tradition says that he came from Edinburgh Germany and Catherine was from
Ireland.  But I have no documents to back that up.  I really would like to
know where he and his wife came from.  Especially how they ended up in Long
Branch Community, (Smith/ DeKalb Counties), Tennessee.

I would like to know what your interest is in this couple!  I could not
believe it when I saw their names appear on genealogy.com. I have searched
other sites but never got such a direct hit before.  Please feel free to
contact me, I would be very interested in comparing notes, even as stale as
mine are!  Perhaps, you even know of others that may be trying to find their
roots along this line!

Thanks for posting that notice!

Jerry Roger Starnes
