ELIZABETH STARNES
I am trying to find the ancestors of my ancestor, Elizabeth Starnes. She married Philip Wolf in Mecklenburg County, NC on July 17, 1794. Joseph Starns was bonsman & Shared Gray was witness. Philip died young & as far as I can tell Elizaabeth never remarried. Their son, Joseph Wolf, who married Hannah Doster, moved with his family to GA & AL by 1860.

WILLIAM C. STERNS

Here is my Sterns line: I am searching for possible tie-in to the Starnes/Stearns lines of NC. I am still searching for parents of William C. Sterns.

My great-great grandfather was William C. Sterns. all records show his birth as March 14, 1812, in NC In 1832 he married Lydia (Lilly) Starnes, in Wilcox Co. Ala. Lydia was dau of Frederick Starnes III & Mary Fisher

William C. and Lydia returned to NC after they were married. Their children are:
Sarah Ann was born 7-18-1833 in NC
Joseph Asbury born 5-12-1835 died 8-20-1837 it is possible this son was also born in NC and died in NC. (The only reference we have of this child is the bible record that was given me by my dad's aunt)William C. and Lydia returned to Wilcox Co. Ala where the next 2 children were born.
Mary Belmont born 8-25-1842
Robert Ervin born 9-9-1849.
We have no date when the mother (Lydia) died, but it is assumed just after the birth of this son Robert Ervin because when her mother's estate was probated in 1850 these 3 living grandchildren of Mary Fisher Starnes were granted Lydia's portion of her estate and their father, William C. Sterns was appointed as their Guardian. I have copies of all legal proceedings from
Wilcox Co. courthouse records.

WHO WAS WILLIAM C. STERNS PARENTS???......Did he have siblings remaining in NC ? From more recent information I have several possibilities: I now need help from you Starnes families. I have drawn charts, pasted and taped yellow pages together that cover my 12' dining table and here are some places in the chart where he could fit.

3 Possibilities:
Jacob Starnes 1750-1812 md. Elizabeth South. 3 of their sons could be his
parents---who were their children???
1. Isaac Starnes who married Agness ?
2. William Starnes who married Mary Downey in 1802
3. John D. Starnes who married Frances Day Settoon.
The information on this Jacob Starnes and Wlizabeth South family was furnished by Mr. John South for the book "Of Them Who Left A Name Behind".
Perhaps someone of Mr. South's family can supply children names of the above
3 sons of Jacob & Elizabeth.

Conrad Starnes 1755-1800 md. Margaret Brown ca 1778,
4 of their sons could be his parents---who were their children????
1. Jesse Starnes b ca 1776 md Rosanna Brown in 1807
2. James Starnes born ca 1781 md ???
3. Jacob Starnes b ca 1785 md. Catherine Brown in 1810
4. Frederick A. Starnes 1790-1873 md Elizabeth Salts in 1810.

Joseph Starnes II born 1797(1798) who married Catherine Bowman they had 10 children....one was a son named William. See page 525 of the Starnes book, "Of Them Who Left A Name Behind" No information is recorded in
the book on this son named William. What year was he born? Does anyone out  there have this information? Joseph Starnes, II and wife Catherine Bowman family information was furnished by a Ms. Lucy Stafford of Glendale, Arizona.
Perhaps she is still living, if not, perhaps some of her children have her papers.

This may be another wild chase, but at least I will know to keep searching
for a place in the Starnes/Stearns/Sterns families to tie in.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

MEIGS COUNTY, TN
Nancy Starnes b. ca 1801 NC m. Wm. Alberto Harbsion b. 1790-1800 NC.  They married in Lincoln Co., NC in 3/1826.  By about 1832, they were in Tn and in 1840 they were in Meigs Co.
Their children were:
Rufus b. ca 1827,
Mary b.ca 1828,
Harriett, b ca1830,
Martha b ca 1832,
Wm. Richard and Elizabeth b.ca 1834,
Benj. Frankllan b.ca 1836,
James b. ca 1838,
John b ca 1842.

Wm.A. Harbsion died bef. 1850 because Nancy is alone with the kids.  By 1880, Nancy, 75, is living with a Sallie (Sarah) Martin, 53 and son, Owen, 20 in Meigs Co.  Nancy is listed as Sallie's mother.  Here is where my confusion comes in.
Sarah is never found with Nancy and Wm. Alberto Harbison and her name at her marriage to Owen Martin in 1844 is Sarah C. Starnes.  Sarah is b. 1826 in NC.  Its possible that Nancy was married previously to a Starnes and Sarah is the result of that marriage.  Its also possible that Nancy had Sarah out of wedlock.  I need to check bastardy bonds in NC to see if there is any record there.

I also find a probate record (property transfer between Owen Martin and a James Roddy) in Meigs Co in 1853 that lists as the Sarah's male relatives a Joshua Starnes and a Rufus Harbison.  I just haven't been able to crack this one yet.

There was also a Benjamin Starnes family in Meigs in 1840:

1840 Census:  Meigs Co, TN
1210001 - 2111001 pg 229
1850 Meigs Co., Tn. - appears to be the same family, but Benj. has died.

Latimore/Moser/Curtis Cemetery Latimore was located in the Third Civil District of Monroe County on the left bank of the Tellico River approximately one-half mile SE of the mouth of Notchy Creek and approximately 600 feet SW of Holstein Drive. TVA determined it would have been isolated by the reservoir.
Norman and Bill Curtis, February, 1997

The Curtis Cemetery was begun when David Burton "Burt" Curtis and William Riley Curtis, Confederate Soldiers and sons of James and Nancy Hagler Curtis, were murdered by "bushwhackers," July 4, 1864, as they were going up the stairs in their home on the Curtis farm (later McGhee, Peter Moser, and Starnes home). They were buried on a small hill in the back. One of their wives was raped. Their brother, Hezekiah "Henry" Wilson Curtis, hunted down and arrested one of the murderers, John Denton. Henry, in turn, was arrested by Unionists and taken prisoner to Union forces in Knoxville. He later robbed a Monroe County store and left the area, never to return. Even though the family was against slavery, due to the need for a mother figure they acquired a slave woman who was allowed to marry a man on a neighboring farm. They had several children. Many of the unidentified graves at the Curtis Cemetery, in the area in which the Confederate buttons were found (and the probable graves of Burt and Riley Curtis) were slaves, identified by the bones. It is probable that these were the graves of the Curtis slaves. Family members said it was used by the neighborhood as a slave cemetery. The Curtis family was not notified by TVA of the re-interment.

Stokes's Cavalry
Company "A"
The Fifth (Union) Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry, sometimes called the First Middle Tennessee Cavalry, was organized at Nashville, Murfreesboro, and Carthage, from July 15, 1862, to March 26, 1864, to serve three years, and was mustered out of service August 14, 1856. The regiment consisted of twelve companies and was recruited by Col. William B. Stokes, acting under authority from Military Governor Andrew Johnson. The regiment was in various battles and skirmishes during the latter part of 1862 and was in the battle of Murfreesboro, or Stone's River. From that battle til the close of the war the regiment was employed mainly in detachments in the eastern part of Middle Tennessee. One battalion was stationed at Shelbyvile for some time and was kept busy also, as, among other duties, it was required to carry the mail from that point to Gallatin. A portion of Stokes's command, under Captain Cain and Lieutenant Carter, was in the battle of Lookout Mountain. A part was also at Chickamauga and Chattanooga under Lieuts. Wingate T. Robinson and Nelson. Subsequently the regiment was ordered to Sparta, Tenn., to bread up the guerrilla bands under Ferguson, Hughes, and Bledso, a contest in which no quarter was given. After this it was ordered to Nashville, where, under Lieut. Col. W. J. Clift, it participated in the battle in front of that city. Upon the removal of the command to Nashville, Colonel Stokes was assigned to command the forces at Carthage.

Three of Stokes's regiments-- Company A, J. H. Blackburn, Captain; Company B, Shelah Waters, Captain; and Company K, E. W. Bass, Captain--were made up of DeKalb County men.

The BRASWELL’s were originally from Nashville, North Carolina.  Two brothers, Bennett (died 19 Apr 1869) who remained in Tennessee.  The other (name not known) was killed on the way returning home.  they had two sisters, one married an EVANS, the other married a TISDALE.  One of the TISDALE sons (Joe) came to Long Branch in Dekalb County, Tennessee to live. Mrs. EVANS was believed to have moved to Arkansas.

What is now Dekalb County (created in 1837) was then either, Davidson (created 1783); Summer (created 1786); Smith or Wilson (created 1799).

Bennett came to Tennessee in early 1800’s married Elizabeth STARNES, born  15 Jul 1807, daughter of Andrew STARNES and Catherine SHERRILL.  they had only one child:  William Andrew, born 17 Nov 1830, died 27 Aug 1885.  Her sisters were: Jennie, married Williams; Delilah (?) handwritten note “McGinnis”

Her brothers: Fed (Fred?) married Pop Exum, “Henry” (?): “Charles” married Nancy Rafferty, born 17 Nov 1830, died (Blank);

William Andrew BRASWELL married Amanda Malvina ALLEN (born 1 Oct 1832, died (blank), 20 Jun 1852.  Their children:

Amanda b. 25 Oct ?? d. (Blank)
