Generation No. 1

1.  GIDEON1 GIFFORD was born Abt. 1777 in NY, and died July 20, 1854.  He married CATHERINE SLAUGHTER October 19, 1813 in Sullivan County, TN, daughter of JOHN JACOB SLAUGHTER and DELANIA UNKNOWN.  She was born Abt. 1789 in Granville County, NC, and died 1872 in Macon County, TN.

Notes for GIDEON GIFFORD:
Gideon, according to his great-granddaughter, Myrtle Gammon Haley, was from the Netherlands, however census records state he was from New York.  Gideon enlisted at Fayetteville, TN on October 1, 1814, in Capt. Anthony H. Metcalf's Co. during the War of 1812 and was honorably discharged at Nashville in April or May of 1815.  Widow's pension papers were filed by Catherine, but were rejected.  The religious belief of Gideon and Catherine is unknown but it has been said that they may have been Quakers.  They are buired in the Gifford Cemetery located at their home site at 9610 Parker Branch Road.

Children of Gideon Gifford, Sr. (1777-1854), Smith Co., Tenn.

In a 1871 Macon Co., Tenn., court case (William C. Gammon vs. Barnett Gifford and others), William Gammon and his wife Mary Malinda Gifford asked for reimbursement from the children of Gideon Gifford, Sr. for the care of Mary's mother Catherine Slaughter Gifford in her old age. This case went on until 1875.

Importantly, this court case, from the research of Randy East, establishes the children of Gideon Gifford, Sr. The following is copied directly from the original handwritten case (punctuation added): ". . .before the court they therefore state that the said Gideon Gifford departed this life leaving of the following children and descendants of those that is now dead to wit Betsy who intermarried with GD Burns, George Gifford, Jo F. Gifford, Hannah Gifford who intermarried to ____Keelaine and John Gifford a son who is dead leaving Peyton, John T. and James A. Gifford as his children, Gideon Gifford, Jr., a son who is dead leaving William H., Sarah A., Jane and Richard L. Gifford as his children, Joel Gifford who is dead leaving Lawson Gifford as his child, Polly Shrum who is dead leaving Gideon, John, Joel, Mary, Malvina and Jane Shrum as her children, Sally Carmon who is dead leaving Simeon Carmon, William Carmon, Teressy who intermarried with ___ Stinson, Sarah who intermarried with WA Jones, Caroline Higdon who is dead a daughter of Sally Carmon, said Caroline died leaving Narcissa, George and John Higdon as her children, DE Carmon, a son of said Sally Carmon is dead, leaving Manoah (?) Carmon as his child and Mary M. Gammon. . ." (here the page ends, and the next page is blank)

Catherine Slaughter, b. about 1789-90, married Gideon Gifford, Sr., on 19 Oct. 1813 in Sullivan Co., Tenn., according to a pension affidavit. The research of Michael Slaughter shows that Catherine (born near Oxford, Granville Co., NC) is the daughter of John Jacob Slaughter, who served in the Revolutionary War, and Delanie "Laner" Slaughter. Jacob is the son of Martin Schlotterer/Slaughter; Delanie is the daughter of Jacob Schlotterer/Slaughter. Based on the birth dates of Gideon's children, it appears his marriage to Catherine (13 years his junior) is his second marriage. Does anyone have information about a first wife who might be the mother of the first five children listed below?

I welcome additions/corrections. I do hope that someone can give me information about Joseph F., Hannah, George or John Gifford. Gideon Gifford's 12 children in probable birth order are:

1. JOSEPH F. GIFFORD. He may be the Joseph F. Gifford, born about 1795-1800, who married Polly (Mary) Lovelady, b. 7 Feb. 1797. Polly (Mary) Lovelady, the daughter of John Lovelady and Mary Ellis, is the sister of Susannah Lovelady who married Jeremiah Gammon. Susannah and Jeremiah's daughter Mary married Gideon Gifford, Jr., (#8 on this list) and their son William married Mary Malinda Gifford (#10 on this list). Also, Polly (Mary) Lovelady is the sister of Sarah "Becky" Lovelady who married Peter Shrum. Sarah and Peter's son Tilmon D. Shrum married Polly Gifford (#5 on this list).
2. SARAH (SALLY) GIFFORD. She married William Carman, Jr., son of William Carman, Sr., and Sarah "Sally" Quine. Since Sarah Gifford's first child was born in 1819, Sarah may have been born about 1800. Sarah and her husband died about 1835. "Word of their deaths finally got back to Meadorville in Macon Co., Tenn., and an uncle of the orphaned children, George C. Gifford, got together some pack horses and went after the orphans." www.carman.net
3. HANNAH GIFFORD. She might be the Hannah Gifford (b. 1802-5) who married John A. Keeling, son of William Keeling and Alice. Interestingly, John is the brother of Joab Keeling who married Lucy Gifford, daughter of Joseph Gifford (1775-1853). If Gideon Gifford, Sr., and Joseph Gifford are brothers, as Gifford researchers suspect, it means cousins Hannah and Lucy married brothers. Hannah married second Arthur B. Mitchell, 1848, Franklin County, Illinois.
4. GEORGE GIFFORD. The court case mentions that George Gifford resides in Trousdale Co., Tenn. in 1875. Is this the George C. Gifford (born 1806) who married Ruth Mungle and has a step-daughter Ellen in the 1880 Trousdale Co. census? A George C. Gifford is mentioned in information about Sarah Gifford's (#2 on this list) orphaned children.
5. POLLY GIFFORD, b. 1810, Tenn.; m. Tilmon D. Shrum; d. after 1850, before 1860. Most of her chidlren are listed in the court case above.
6. ELIZABETH (BETSY) GIFFORD, b. about 1814; m. Gregory D. Burns; d. about 1893.
7. JOHN GIFFORD. He might be the John W. Gifford, b. 1816, who married Elizabeth C. Linville, daughter of William Linville and Mary Jane Anderson. In the 1840 Smith Co., Tenn., census, a John W. Gifford, his wife and child live two households from Gideon Gifford (#8 on this list), wife Mary Gammon, and child. In the 1850 Wayne Co., Missouri, census, John W.'s children are George C. Gifford, b. 1838; Bailey Peyton Gifford, b. 1843 (who m. Francis Elizabeth Barker); John R.F. Gifford, b. 1844; and James A. Gifford, b. 1848.
8. GIDEON GIFFORD, JR., b. 1819, married Mary Gammon, daughter of Jeremiah "Jerry" Gammon and Susannah Lovelady. Gideon's children in the court case are: (1) William H. Gifford, b. 14/17 March 1841; m. Permelia Neal, 1862; d. 3 Aug 1930, Franklin Co., Illinois (2) Sarah (Sally) Ann Gifford, b. 6 Jan. 1845; m. Edward/Edmond Lee Towns, 1865; d. 22 Jan. 1888, Tenn. (3) Eliza Jane Gifford, b. 1849-50; m. about 1871 Joseph (Job) Patterson; family is in 1880 Franklin County, Illinois census. (4) Richard Leroy Gifford, b. 1852, Tenn.; in the 1870 Dixon Springs, Smith Co., Tenn., census, he lives with his aunt Jane "Jenny" Gammon and husband Spencer Woodmore, next door to his grandmother Susannah Lovelady Gammon.
9. BARNETT (BARNEY) GIFFORD, b. 1821; m. Ann Willmore. He is named for Catherine Slaughter Gifford's brother Barnett Slaughter.
10. MARY MALINDA GIFFORD, b. 1823; m. William C. "Billy Dodd" Gifford, brother of Mary Gammon who married Gideon Gifford, Jr. (#8 on this list).
11. BRICE GIFFORD, b. 1826; d. 7 Oct. 1861, during War Between the States, Bowling Green, Ky. He was a Confederate in Co. C., 24th Tennessee Infantry.
12. JOEL GIFFORD, b. 1828; m. Rusha J. ___. In 1870, the family of six children is in Millcreek Township, Izard Co., Ark., with a housekeeper, without parents. The oldest child, William Gifar (sic), 19, is a farmer. he is William L. Gifford--probably the "Lawson Gifford" mentioned in the court case.

I believe but cannot prove that the Slaughters in Sulllivan Co. Tenn moved there around 1800 as some kind of family group from Granville area of North Carolina. Based on census records from the 1790s it appears the Slaughters in North Carolina lived along the Tar River and had changed their names from Schlotterer. I do not know why but my guess is simply to Anglicize (sp?) the spelling of their name. At FamilySearch.com you can find the generation where this occurred by searching on the name Jacob Schlotterer. Click on the one with the following entry: Gender: M Birth/Christening: 25 Jul 1732 Bodelshausen, Schwarzwald, Wuerttemberg. Clicking on his family you will see that the children are named Slaughter.

You might also be interested in looking at the manifest for the ship that brought the Schlotterers to America. It was the Chesterfield, arriving in Philadelphia in 1749.
http://www.palproject.org/pa/1749chest.htm

You will note that two brothers Martin and Jacob are listed as well as some other possible relatives. Note too that Martin's birthdate appears to be a misprint. It probably should be 4-15-1732.

THE SLAUGHTERS OF CULPEPER
Compiled by Michael T. Slaughter <71420.1477>

This is a brief genealogy of the Slaughters who originated in England. In particular this is a compilation of the descendants of Robert Slaughter and Frances Anne Jones of St. Mark's Parish in
Culpeper County, Virginia. The Slaughter family I am a part of originated in Bodelshausen, Wurttemberg in Germany. The ancestor of my family was Jacob Schlotterer. He came over to Philadelphia and lived in Germantown, Pennsylvania a short time before moving with his family to Granville County, North Carolina. Starting in the 1700s members of both families started migrating westward. Some, especially in the English family, migrated southward because of government land grants for military service.

I have put this together to aid me in sorting out the various Slaughters who migrated into Tennessee, Kentucky and other southern states. Since first names run in families, I can tell that some people belong in one family or another. For example, in the English family there are a lot of men named Robert and Francis. In the German family there are a lot of men named Jacob, Abraham, Isaac and Martin. Other names, such as William, John and Thomas, are common in both families. There are large numbers of both families in Tennessee and Kentucky.

The sources I have used are all very old, the most recent having been compiled about 1910. As is common in many old genealogies, there are not many dates given in these sources. I have included
every date I could find and any other information I could find that would help identify people. The first genealogy of the Slaughters in Virginia was in _St. Mark's Parish_ by Rev. Dr. Philip Slaughter
written about 100 years ago. He said, "We limit our notice of the Slaughter family to two brothers, Robert and Francis, who were transplanted into St. Mark's Parish early in the eighteenth century, as it is not worth while to trace back to the stock from whence they sprang in England." I did most of this research almost 20 years ago and did not record the sources that I photocopied information from. The first reference I used was an updated version of _St. Mark's Parish_ which was included in a compendium of genealogies. The next source wasThe Slaughters of Culpeper, which was a chapter in the book _Colonial Families of the Southern States of America_. The third source I used was Slaughter Family, which was a section in the book _Virginia Families_.

There is one excellent source of material on Slaughters that I havenot yet sifted through (except in search of my own relatives).  In California in the late 1800s, an attorney named Henry Smith
Slaughter did a lot of research on the Slaughter name. He researched all Slaughters because he did not know which ones were related to him and which were not. He mentions Jacob Slaughter of Granville County, North Carolina, who was my ancestor, but could find no evidence of a common origin between Jacob and the Slaughters of Virginia. The Henry Smith Slaughter papers fill a large box and are mostly old ledger books he used for his handwritten notes. They are kept at the Filson Club in Louisville,
Kentucky, which is a privately funded history and genealogy library.
