Contributed by Martha S. Smith, 5/28/2001

Generation No. 1

1.  JAMES2 CARDEN*  (ROBERT1) was born Abt. 1790 in N.C., and died Abt. 1830 in Shelby Co, AL.  He married MARY NELL "POLLY" LYON* Abt. 1816 in Greene Co, AL, daughter of JOHN LYON and SOPHIA TEAGUE.  She was born Abt. 1795 in S.C., and died Abt. 1830 in Shelby Co, AL.

Notes for JAMES CARDEN -
November 18, 2001-updated
Since posting my CARDEN info. on your site earlier this year, I've still kept 'hunting' my 3G-Gr. father JAMES CARDEN's (1790-1830 ) direct family connections.  Recently I found his son - my JHR (James HarveyReuben) CARDEN (1821-1899) - on the 1880 census for Shelby Co, AL.  On that census he states that his father was born NC & mother was born SC.  This info. about his father is new to me because I've always been told the family came into AL from SC...North Carolina was never mentioned as 'part of the mix' for that generation.  I know that the Revolution drove people out of NC into SC...etc, so it's not so unlikely.  James CARDEN named this only son James Harvey Reuben.  James & Sophia CARDEN
died when JHR was about 9 years old (1830), so not much is known about their entry into AL or their place of origin.  JHR had an older sister - Stacy CARDEN who was b- 1817 (or abt. 13 when her parents died)...accounts vary as to TN or AL.  Her tombstone says TN, but 4 straight censes in AR, where she went w/ her husband in 1854, say Stacy was born in AL.

Anyway, all that to say this...I can now focus on NC as a possible source of my Carden family info.   By looking at my JHR's children's names there is the surname FULLER in one of their given names,  also some of the other children had the given names Reuben, Leonard & Robert.  I know that this may be grasping @ straws, but am trying to place my JHR's father JAMES CARDEN in the  family where there were FULLER's because of these given names.  It seems only logical that since JAMES CARDEN died young, that his son (JHR) could've known his father's brother's names and used them for his own children.

It's like this JAMES B. CARDEN, b- 1756 could've been the uncle of my JAMES CARDEN but I don't know who to look at as a possibility for my JAMES' father.

Martha... it's probably the same guy, and I'd like some info to "flesh" him out, since right now, all I have is his name. I had been told (by Ray Lyon) that James Harvey Reuben Carden (no dates) was the son of James Carden & Polly Lyon, and brother to Stacy Sophia Carden.  It seems that I was told that Polly's parents, John Lyon and Sophia Teague were appointed guardianship of their 3 grandchildren, one of which was Stacy Carden.

Stacy Sophia Carden was born 10/4/1817 in TN and died 4/11/1886 in Louisiana (buried in Whitehall Cemetery in ClaiborneParish).  She married Green M. Elliott (5/8/1820-2/27/1897).  I have noted that on the 1850 Shelby Co. Census, Green & Stacy and family are found, and that there is a family of Carden's ( I did't note who, however, but that's easily found on-line) living next door to the family of Amos M. Elliott (who was Green's cousin).

Anyway, Green Elliott was the son of amos Elliott, Sr. & Nancy Hail.  (it's going to get confusing, here). Amos Elliott, Sr. had sons with his first wife (unknown); one of which was William Elliott who married Mary Hail, and another that was Amos Elliott, Jr. who married Sarah Hail.  Mary and Sarah were the daughters of Joseph Hail and Mary Elizabeth Lindsey.  It is belived that Nancy Hail (who was Green's mother) was the sister of Joseph Hail (although some people have her listed as his daughter, as sister to Mary & Sarah, but I believe that is wrong).  Anyway, Mary Elizabeth Lindsey was the daughter of David Lindsey & Mary Casey.  Another of their children was Elijah Lindsey (1783-1836).  I am descended from Elijah thus: Elijah & his 2nd wife, Mary unknown>Margaret Lindsey who m. Charles Wood>Ella Wood who m. Columbus C. Parker>Cora Parker who m. Thomas B. Craddock>Thomas P. Craddock who m. Geraldine Baskin> ME (Barbara Dale Craddock)

The Lindsey's were the first family that I started trying to document.  David Lindsey was a Rev. Soldier, and the Montevallo DAR is named after him (Shelby Co, AL), and there has been quite a bit of DAR documentation on him.  As I got to trying to figure out how all the people with the same surnames that were marrying into the associated families at that time in that part of AL, I amassed quite a bit of data on families that were only "marginally" related to me....  But I'm like a dog with a bone in that respect!! Those darn Elliott's gave me fits!  And the more I found, the more questions I had!

Notes for JAMES HARVEY REUBEN CARDEN:  [Billie Carden Sullivan.3b.FTW]
Family tradition has it that as a young man of about 14, J.H.R. Carden's father (James) traveled with his father to America from England. In all probability, the family were Scottishor Welch in descent, but were living in England. Supposedly James'  father was a Shakespearean actor.

Seeking a better life for the family, James' father made his wife & two daughters comfortable in the knowledge that he would establish himself with a realtive in South Carolina, then come back for them as soon as he could.  Voyages to America took a month or so and then some time had to be allowed for finding a place for the family to live.  After settling James in with a relative, Mr. Carden went back for his wife and daughters, never to be seen again.  As far as is known, the ship was lost at sea.

Thus separated from his family by death and circumstance, James remained in America. When the rest of the family decided to move to the newly opened Alabama Territory, he went with them, settling in the areas known today as Bibb & Shelby Co.

During the Civil War, J.H.R. Carden was a conscientious objector. However, he volunteered to act as a nurse (medic in today's modern terminology), attaching himself  to several Alabama units, thus providing aid to the troops in the form of medical & spiritual comfort.

I have a copy of an article from the Alabama Baptist (magazine?) dated July 6,l899 that I would be glad to mail you a copy of. It was written by E.H. Teague who knew him quite well. The article says James Harvey Reuben Carden was born in Greene Co, AL, was temporarily in St. Clair Co, but was brought up mostly in Shelby County by his grandparents because both of his parents died while he was a small child.

4/28/2001 -  In some of Aunt Berta's notes ---  The Obit. for Mary Eliza Dean CARDEN

Mrs. Eliza Carden, wife of Rev. J.H.R. Carden, died at her home in Shelby Co, Aug. 1, 1894.  Sister Carden was born in TN, Dec. 12, 1816; moved to AL in 1821, was mar. Oct. 3, 1839.  She professed hope in Christ (1849---maybe meant to be 1839, the year she married JHR Carden) and was bapt. into the fellowship of Bethesda Baptist Church by Roy J.M. Scott in (1842).
Sister Carden was the mother of 10 children, 8 of whom are living, and together with 49 gr-children, attended her in her last illness.  Nearly all were present at her burial in the Bethesda Cemetery.
For 52 years (since 1842?) Sister Carden lived a consistent Christian life.  She was faithful in all the relations of life.  She now rests from her labors and her works do follow her.

NOTE:  The above is copied from a newspaper clipping.  Note differences in dates of profession (1849) and baptism (1842). This is copied as given in the newspaper clipping,  3/16/1972.

Notes for NANNICE (NANNIS) ANN "NAN" FANCHER: 3/31/2001 -  Larry Parks  < lparks3@bellsouth.net >
Martha,
To answer your questions, I looked in the Book " Richard Fancher(1700 -1764) of Morris Co, N.J." by Paul Buford Fancher. The author has Thornton Fancher born about 1818 married Harriet Lemley on  January 14, 1844 in Shelby County and buried at Union Grove Cemetery in Randolph, Alabama. They had 12 Children, among them was Col. Manus Lemley, born January 30, 1848 and Nannice (1848 - January 24 , 1923).  Nannice married William Carden on December 5, 1875 . ( I have made a note to myself in this book that a copy of Thornton's will is located in the Bibb County Probate office).

My grand-mother (Emma) was the daughter of Thomas M. Fancher. I would also mention that my grand-parents ( Emma and Clay Owen) lived closed to Bulldog bend and had some Lemleys (Ruby and Junie ) as neighbors. They are buried at Cahaba Valley Baptist Church.
( MY NOTE:  This church is in Bibb Co, abt. 5 miles out of Montevallo on Hwy. 25 to Centerville).

I hope that I have helped you, Larry

Larry, saw your post on Genforum while looking for some of my FANCHER connections in Shelby & Bibb Co, AL.  Was hoping you still work on that line.  Not knowing much about my NANCY ANN FANCHER's parents or her line, I wonder if you have either of these folks in your database ?

My g-g.parents were Nancy Ann FANCHER (4/12/1848 - 1/24/1923) in Shelby Co, AL mar.  William Carey
CARDEN (2/19/1854 - 12/16/1923).  The're both buried in Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery, near Chelsea in Shelby Co, AL.

Notes for SAMUEL PAGE MONTGOMERY FANCHER:
4/28/2001 - Received packet from Bud Burns today with some of Aunt Berta's genealogy materials.
This note dated 11/19/1986 to her from J.A. "Jim" Fancher, 2717 Highland Ave, B'ham, AL, ph-324-8146, was included:

My father - Wilson Arlyn Fancher mar. Roberta Cherry.  He's bur. @ Four Mile Cemetery, Shelby Co, AL
My Grandfather - Samuel Page Montgomery Fancher mar. Idella Wilder.  Both bur. @ Four Mile Cem.
My Great Grandfather - Col. Manus Lemley Fancher mar. Ann Haseltine Carden. Both are bur. @ Prospect Baptist Church, Westover, AL
My G-G- Grandfather - (William) Thornton Fancher
My G-G-G- Grandfather - Benjamin Fancher
My G-G-G-G-Grandfather -  Richard Fancher,  from Stamford, CT

(Except for Arlyn Fancher and Jim Fancher this is what I'd found out thru my own research, so this is a verify...MAS)

He also wrote in several other names, but IDK how they fit in.  Huston Fancher, Cahaba Heights, B'ham,
(ph.967-1476); and Paul Fancher, 1479 Ashwoody Ct., NE, Atlanta, GA, 30319 -- may be sons or brothers of Jim Fancher.  They seem to be contemporary.  Then there's a few names assos. with Watkins Bookstore, evidently in B'ham from the ph.- 836-4306 : Fred D. Fanshir, Florence , ONT, CANADA; and
Johnson Fancher.  The words "Fancher Train -- Amelia Bean" were written in, with no explanation.
