                          Henry Bonner, 1738

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN.  I, Henry Bonner, of Chowan precinct, in the
province of north Carolina, planter, Calling to mind the uncertainty of
this life, Do make and ordain this Insturment of Writing to be and purport
my Last Will and testament, and as to what Estate it hath pleased God to
bless me with here, I Give and bequeath in the manner and form following,
to wit:

I Give and bequeath to my son, Henry Bonner, all that my plantation,
tract, or seat of Land Lying in the precinct aforesaid, and whereon I
now Live, with the Appurtenances, to him and his heirs forever. I give and
bequeath all that my plantation, tract, or seat of Land Lying in
Greenhall, in the precinct aforesaid, and the appurtenances, to my said
son, Henry Bonner, and his heirs forever.

I give and bequeath to my son, Thomas Bonner, all these my three
plantations, tracts, or seats of Land Lying in the precinct aforesaid,
Comonly called and known by the names of Brin's, Holes's, and Jones's
plantation, with their appurtenances, to him and his heirs forever.

I give and bequeath all that my plantation, tract, or seat of Land Lying
in the precinct aforesaid, comonly Called by the name of Bayes's
plantation, to my Grandson, Richard Lewis, and his heirs forever.

I give and bequeath unto my said son, Henry Bonner, all the Stock of what
nature or kind soever that is now on and belonging to the aforesaid
plantation in Greenhall, and Six Negroe Slaves Called, to wit: Sam, James,
Maria, priss, Kate and Bob, One new feather bed and furniture, one Oval
table, one brass kettle, six new peuter dishes, four peuter basons, six
peuter sup plates, six peuter fiat plates.

I give unto my said son Thomas Bonner all and every of the stock that is
now on, and belonging to the aforesaid two plantations Called Brin's and
Holes's, and five Negroe slaves called, to wit: Cush, Suew, Cudjoe, Tomboy
and Doll, One new feather bed and furniture, One Oval table, six new
pewter dishes, four pewter basons, six sup plates, and Six fiat plates,
and One mare.

I give and bequeath to my Daughter, Elizabeth Lewis, One Negroe woman
slave, Called Grace, One new feather bed and furniture.

I give and bequeath to my Grandson, Richard Lewis, a Negroe girl slave
called, Nann.

I give and bequeath to my Daughter, Deborah Bonner, One new feather bed
and furniture, and three Negroe slaves Called, Minge, Simon, and phebe.

I give and bequeath unto my Daughter, Mary Bonner, One new feather bed and
furniture, and three Negroe slaves Called, Daniel, Dinah, and Jane.

I give and bequeath to my Grand daughter, Sarah Lewis, One Negroe Slave
Called Joan.

I give and bequeath unto my Grand daughter, Deborah Lewis, one Negroe
slave Called, Moll.

I give and bequeath all the rest and residue of my personal Estate unto my
said Children, to wit: Henry, Thomas, Elizabeth, Deborah, and Mary, to be
Equally divided amongst them.

And all the rest and residue of my real Estate, I Order and direct my
Executor, hereafter mentioned, to dispose of, and the moneys arising
therefrom to be Laid out for the Educating and maintaining my two
Daughters, Deborah, and Mary, in their minority, and that they Live with
my Daughter, Elizabeth, and that she have the Care and management of them.
And further it is my Will and pleasure, that my son, Henry, before the
Negroes are Divided between him and his Brother Thomas, do make or Cause
to be made upon One of thc plantations herein bequeathed unto the said
Thomas, which he, the said Thomas, shall direct sixty thousand bricks for
building a house thereon.

It is my Will and pleasure that my said son, Thomas, do Live with my son
Henry, during his minority, and I appoint my friend John Benbery to take
care that the Estate herein bequeathed to the said Thomas, be not in the
mean time be embeziled or wasted.

And I do hereby nominate and appoint my said son, Henry Bonner, to be
Executor of this my Last Will & testament, Revolting and annulling all
former Wills by me heretofore made, and pronouncing, publishing and
Declaring this to be my Last Will and testament.
In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal, at Chowan
precenct aforesaid, the twenty first day of September, 1738.

Came before me Dr. Abraham Blackhall, & James Potter, & made oath that
they saw Coil: Henry Bonner, sign, seal & publish ye within as his last
will & testament, that he was of sound & disposing mind & memory, & that
Mr. Joseph Anderson subscribed as a witness thereto.
At the same time, Mr. Henry Bonner took ye oath appointed by law to be
taken by executors.

The 1790 census was begun August 2, 1790. The marshals were expected to finish the census within nine months of the Census Day –by May 1, 1791. Although most of the returns were in long before the deadline, Congress had to extend the count until March 1 1792. By that time some people were probably counted who had not been born or present by 1790

The petition of John Bonner by Ben Fulford his guardian and next friend,
Jno. Kewell and wife, Thos. Ellison and wife, Edward Griffeth & wife,
and Thos. Bowen-Sheweth unto your worships that Benjamin Peyton departed
this life about the year 1760 possessed of a piece of land situate and
lying in the county of Beaufort on the So. side of the So. dividing
creek, Beg. at John Turners line 60 po. from the mouth of Bailey's
Creek, running along John Turners line So. 7 W. 245 to a white oak in
Turners line So. 80 W. 660 po to a cypress swamp. No. 10 W. 415 po to a
red oak in the Swamp, No. 80 E. 420 po to Wm. Wallaces corner, So. 16 E
280 po to the bridge, No. 50 E. 320 po along Wm. Wallace's line to the
mouth of a little creek, So 40 E. to the mouth of Baileys Creek, then to
the Beg. Containing one thousand six hundred  acres leaving five
daughters (to wit) Mary Peyton who marryed Henry Snoad and died without
issue, Sarah who married Thomas Bonner who died leaving your petitioner
Jno. Bonner his heir at law, Elizabeth who married John Porter and left
the wife of John Kewell  your petitioner, Ellinor who married Wm. Tripp
and had issue Harriett and Julia & who married  Thos. Ellison and Edward
Griffith your petitioners and Grace who married Bazil Smith by whom she
had issue Benj'n R. Smith who has conveyed his interest in the same to
Thomas Bowen your petitioner.  That at the death of Mary Peyton alias
Mary Snowd she was possessed of a piece of land on the So. side of
Pamptico River on the West. side of the So. Dividing Creek, Beginning at
a branch joining Ben Peyton's land & running thence So. Up the Creek 640
poto a chesnut oak by the side of cypress Swamp, West 160 po to the
pocosin along the pocosin side 640 po. Thence to the first station
contg. Six hundred and forty acres, That your pititioners are the only
legal representatives of Mary Snowd she having died without issue.

They therefore pray you to appoint five commissioners to lay off and
divide the same among them & when having done so to make their return to
this Worshipful Court & as in duty ound they will ever pray.

                          John Bonner, 1753

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN.  The Eleventh Day of November, and the year of our
Lord God, One Thousand, Seven Hundred and fifty Three. I, John Bonner, of
Chowan County, in the Province of North Carolina, Planter, being very Sick
and weak in Body, but of perfect mind and Memory, Thanks be given unto God
for it, Therefore calling unto Mind the Mortality of my Body, and knowing
that it is appointed for all men once to Die, do make and Ordain this my
last Will and Testament, That is to say, Principally and first of all, I
give and recommend my Soul into the Hands of God that gave it; and my Body
I recomend to the Earth, to be buried in decent Christian Burial at the
Discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting byt at the general
Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty Power of God: and
as touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me
in this life, I give, demise and dispose of the same in the following
manner and Form:

Imprimis.  I Give and bequeath unto my God Son, Thomas Ecleston, Two Negroe
Boys, Jack, and Cato., Six Cows and calves, & m Riding Horse, to be
deliver'd him when he comes to Age, and if he should die without Heir
Lawfully begotten of his Body, the same to return to my Brother, Thomas
Bonner.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my Cousin, William Howcott, one Negroe Boy
Named, Bob. and if he should Die without Heir, the said Negro Boy to be
Divided between his Two Sisters, Elizabeth and Mary Howcott.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my Cousin, Edward Howcott one Negroe Girl
Named, Grace. and if he should Die without Heir, the said Girl, to be
divided between the aforesaid Elizabeth and Mary Howcott.

Item. I Give and bequeath to my Sister, Sarah Howcott, One Gold ring.

Item. I Give and bequeath to my Sister, Martha Howcott, One Gold Ring.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Brother, Thomas Bonner, my Plantations
whereon I now Live, and all the Land that I have now in my Possession,
Likewise all the Rest and Residue of my worldly Estate. (Except such as is
herein before mentioned.)

I Likewise constitute and Appoint the aforesaid Thomas Bonner, my Sole
Executor of this my Last Will and Testament; I Likewise leave John Benbury
and Henry Bonner as Trustees to see that my Will is fulfilled according to
my Desire. And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke, disannul all and every
other former Testatments, Wills, Legacies and Bequests, and Executors, by
me in any ways before Named, Willed and bequeathed; ratifying and
Confirming
this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal, the Day and Year

that he saw John Bonner sign Seal Publish and Declare the within to be and

and Jeremiah Mitchener Sign there names thereto at the same time then
appeared Thomas Bonner Executor to the within Will and was duly Qualified

"In the Name of God Amen I Thomas Bonner of the County aforesaid and province aforesaid being in my full senses and memory I do to prevent disputes in my Family after my desire do make this my last will and Testament in manner and form following, First and principally I commend my soul to the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my Body to be buried in a Christian like manner.  Secondly I give to my well beloved SON THOMAS BONNER and his heirs one hundred acres of Land be the same more or less lying & being bounded by the rode by hog pen Branch and knee Branch. I give to my well beloved Daughter ESTHER MORE two hundred  acres of Land to her and her heirs, bounded by the rode and hintons Line and blitenhenden Line. 4thly I give my SON HENRY BONNER the Sum of one Shilling sterling Money of Great Britian.  5thly I give unto my Dafter Eliza WHEELER the sum of one Shilling Ster. Mondy of Great Britian. Sixthly I Give my Daughter ANNE BYRDE the sum of one shilling Ster. Money of Great Britian & also I give my Dafter SARAH WHARTON the sum of one Shilling Sterling Money of Great Britian also I give my Dafter PATIENCE BYRDE the sum of one Shilling Sterling Money of Great Britian. 7thly I give to my son MOSES BONNER the sum of one Shilling Sterling Money of Great Britian.  Also I Give to my well beloved wife ELIZTH. BONNER all the rest of my Estate both real and personal of all kinds whatsoever to her disposal forever. Troops, and Clerk of Hyde County Court 1781, 1785-1787. f. Thomas. m.

Jesse Bryan (1744-94) was lieutenant, 1776, in the Craven County, North Carolina troops. He was born and died in Newbern, N. C.
Robert Tripp (1722-1800) was a delegate to the Halifax Congress, 1776. He was born in Rhode Island; died in Cane Point, N. C.
Also No. 36061.
Joseph Guilford (1761-1840) was a private, 1780, under Capt. Samuel Barrow and Colonel Seawell. He died in Beaufort County, N. C.
John Wallace (1721-99) and Joseph Gainer were members, 1775, of the Committee of Safety of Pitt County, N. C., where they were born and died.
