Notes on the Barkany name:
Barkany, Barkányi, or Barkanda
The Barkanji seems like it could be Slovenian spelling but why are there no Barkany in the phone book of Slovenia, Croatia.
Why was the name changed to Barkanji ?  or it was a misstransliteration and it actually was Barkanyi / Barkany.

Jewish possiblities
Andrew does not strike me like a name for a Hebrew child but I am not Hebrew so what do I know.
Eugen Bárkány (1885-1967), architect, director of Neolog Jewish Community in Prešov (1940-42)

Other Barkany names in Ellis Island
Barkonda, Janos passing thru EI in 1900 is the only closes spelling to Barkanda.
Barkunda, Mihaly arriving in 1912 might be connected to Janos since the towns are Lazony and Hazany with the second being Lazony. BUT looking at Mihaly's manifest clearly his name is Varkunda.

I am searching for information about my Barkany ancestor.

My husband's ancestor is Andras Barkany from Hungary.  The top one below is his ship's manifest.  The other two Barkany males I have no idea who they are.  But
they are the only ones in the Ellis Island data base.  They were not on the same ship with my Andras Barkany or with each other.  The only connection between all three are the same surname of Barkany.

My questions:
[1] Where is Andras Barkany's Place of Residence - T. Sft. Milela. or (Mihály)
[2] Where are the other Places of Residence located such as  Holes Horn and Brjod, Croatia.
I am trying to determine if these 3 Places of Residence could be close in proximity.

There was an Austrian actress, Marie Barkany born at Kaschau, Hungary.

I looked on the manifest and it looks like T. Szent Miklos. This could Tiszaszentmiklos which is in Torontal megye and in Yugoslavia/Serbia.

Could possibly be Turóczszentmihály, which in 1913 was in Turócz county, Stubnyafürdõi district, and which is now Sococve, Slovakia.

Note from Theresa Myrle Augustine, Dec 3, 1985:
"People who have lived many generations in this country do not remember a time when their surname was any different than it is now. But people who came to this country, after there was an immigration service with bureaucrats checking them into the country, sometimes suffered a name change because the bureaucrats could not spell their names or understand them when they tried to speak English. Also many immigrants wanted to leave the 'old country' behind them and be Americans and took names that were more Anglicized. I don't really know what the case was with my ancestors, but both sides suffered name changes.
"There is no question about what 'Barkanda' was in the old country -- it was 'Barkanji' and is so spelled throughout this booklet when referring to my grandfather, Andrew Barkanji. His children I call Barkanda."
I followed the same practice - Thor Carden Feb 13, 1995

Another note from Theresa Myrle Augustine, probably in late 1985:
"Andrew Barkanji -- wild black hair, flashing black eyes, large bushy moustache, dark skinned, deep wrinkled -- born in Budapest, Hungaria, married to Elizabeth Keller, buried his only sons, still children, in Budapest, fought a no-win war, carried a bullet in his head to his grave, moved is family to Mako so his wife would be close to her parents, left his homeland to make a new home in a new country so no man could tell him it was his turn to fight in a war he did not believe in, raised 4 daughters to adulthood on a small dirt farm, buried his wife -- proud, honest, hard working, harsh, stern, terrible tempered, probably unloved -- but beholden to no man."
Death Certificate gives home address as Fort Foote. I believe he lived on a farm close to this town. Thor Feb, 1995

Elizabeth Keller was short, stout and had been crippled by polio at the age of 3. Her husband, Andrew, came to the USA first and then sent for Elizabeth and the girls. They arrived Dec 4, 1903.

Note from Theresa Myrle Augustine, Dec 3, 1985:
"All sources available to me are consistent in saying Elizabeth Barkanda's maiden name was 'Keller,' she had no given name other than Elizabeth but she used the middle initial 'G.' I therefore think her maiden name was really 'Gellar,' or 'Geller,' which is a Hungarian name, it may even have been pronounced 'Keller.'

Another note from Theresa Myrle Augustine in late 1985:
"Elizabeth Keller was born in Mako, Hungary. At some point in time she married Andrew Barkanji, and they lived in Budapest before moving back to Mako. I know she had brothers, at least two. I have no knowledge as to possible sisters. Since she used the initial 'G' in her married name, Elizabeth G. Barkanda, I believe there is a possibility her middle name was Geller or Gellar, both of which, I believe are Hungarian names."
She was short and stout and crippled since she was 3 years old from Polio. She came to USA with her 3 daughters. They arrived Dec 04 1903. She had several sisters and brothers. At least 2 brothers. One blond, clean shaven, probably the younger and one the older one had black hair and a large balck moustache. Elizabeth was very superstitious. Believed in werewolves.

Another note from Theresa Myrle Augustine, probably in late 1985:
"John G. Augustine was the brother of Fabian Adam Augustine, the uncle of John William Augustine, so I was double related to the children of Julia and John G. Augustine." Note from Thor - John William Augustine was Theresa Myrle's dad. Rosa Barkanda was Theresa Myrle's mom. John G. Augustine, Theresa Myrle's great uncle married her maternal aunt, Julia Barkanda.

According to Fran Augustine, Andrew's grandson, Andrew never learned to speak English very well. He had fought as a soldier in the Austria/Hungarian army in a calvary unit against the Turks in some border dispute. This is the "no win war" referred to above.

The Etruria and Umbria were the last Cunarders to be fitted with auxiliary sails and the lst to be built with single screws, thus they marked the end of an era. In 1884 they were record breakers and the largest liners then in service.

The two ships were financed by an exchange deal with the builders, whereby two old Cunarders Parthia and Batavia were handed over for re-sale. They were designed so that they could be easily converted in to auxiliary cruisers in times of war.

By March 1885 the Etruria had been completed and on the 26th it arrived in the Clyde from Liverpool. On 25 April it made its maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York, and then set a new record crossing on its second voyage. The Etruria was involved in a collision with the Canada, a cargo ship owned by the the National Steamship Co. of Limerick. Fortunately it was only a glancing collision and there were no injuries and very little real damage.

The Etruria remained on the Liverpool- New York run without incident until the beginning of 1902. On 22 February the Etruria left New York for Queenstown but on the way the propeller shaft broke and the ship was left drifting helplessly. Distress signals attracted a Leyland ship, the William Cliff, which helped make temporary repairs. The following day the Etruria was towed to the Azores. A rough crossing later the same year also caused a fractured propeller shaft and a new one had to be sent out from England to New York as a replacement. Again, in early 1903, the Etruria was in the news as it ran aground at the entrance to the Gedrey Channel whilst leaving New York. Fortunately it was easily refloated. later that year the Etruria was only four hours out of New York when it struck a freak wave, apparently some fifty feet high. Part of the forebridge was carried away and the guardrail stanchions were smashed and one Canadian passenger was fatally injured.

In 1907 two of the Etruria's seamen were killed while trying to secure the lashings of the starboard anchor during rough weather. By this time both ships were past their prime and technical progress had well and truly overtaken them. Later that year the Lusitania and Mauretania were due to enter service.

In August 1908 the Etruria was due to make its final Atlantic crossing but as it left the dock at Liverpool, unfortunately, it collided with a hopper crossing the Mersey. Damage caused to the rudder and propeller meant that it was unable to sail. It was laid up for while and then in October 1909 Cunard announced that it would be sold to the shipbreakers Thomas Ward for £16,750. The Etruria eventually arrived at Preston, Lancashire on 10 April 1910 to be scrapped.
