Myrle as a child

Myrle and Phil July 4, 1976

July 4th was Myrle's favorite holiday.  She was a great believer in personal liberty.  She was quite involved in politics.  Over the years as she studied and learned she became a Republican and finally a Libertarian. She was one of the founders of the Libertarian Party in Tennessee.  Here are a couple of sound clips where she and husband Phil Carden were guests on WLAC talk Radio in Nashville, TN.  Ruth Ann Leach is the interviewer.

Theresa Myrle Augustine was born March 13, 1921 in Maryland and died December 24, 1988 in Madison, Tennessee of pancreatic cancer. Myrle married Phil Carden Aug 20, 1946. Together they raised six children, 5 of whom are still living as of May, 1999.

She loved to play with her grandchildren. She asked that they call her Grandma Louie. She never really explained why she liked that name - at least to me. Thor Carden 9/27/1997

Perfect Attendance Certificate - June 16th, 1933
She also got one for 1934. Middle School Diploma - June 19th, 1934

Myrle participated in High School Dramatics
Myrle graduated Friday, June 17, 1938 from Hyattsville High School. The list of graduates from the program show her in the academic course portion. Her report cards for 1936-38 show an 'A' average in Algebra and Trigonometry, high marks in science, and generally good marks. Family legend says that she had a scholarship to an engineering school until they realized she was a girl. The name Myrle fooled them at first.

Carden Academy was started in 1953
