Carden home, built about 1771,(!)
in New Kent, VA

From: "JoAnne O Yates" <j.yates@prodigy.net>

Story goes that it was a Royal Land Grant, to the Cardens.  Current resident is the great granddaughter in law of JJ Carden, Mrs. Louise Bailey Garthwright.  She's in her late 70's, very tiny, only about 4-1/2 feet tall if that!  She had to sell some of the family land to the County to pay taxes, and the land became the "Royal New Kent Golf Course" due to the fact that it had
been bought from the family who had a King's Land Grant, possibly from one of the King James.

The church that the Cardens, Garthwright's, etc. attended was chartered in 1771.  The farm has been in the family since at least that time.
