We have SMITH as my Grandmother Willie Aquilla Smith, and Hugh's wife was Lula McSpadden.

Joseph W. married Judith KENNER. KENNERs go back to ESKRIDGE and to LEE of Virginia.

Thomas, Leola & Vinnie Carden   circa 1911   AL>FL
From: "Brandi Barnes" <carden_girls@yahoo.com>

1) My gg grandfather was Thomas Bartholomew Carden b. apx, 1863 in AL, d. 1939 in Panama City,FL. He married
to Christianna Levina (Vinnie) Sewell (b. 1860 d. 1933) sometime between 1876 and 1879. I give this time frame because Vinnie had a daughter from a previous marriage, Corrine Tunnell, who was born in 1875 and Thomas & Vinnie's first child, Lillie Bell, was born in 1879. Thomas and VInnie had a total of 7 children of their own; 3 boys and 4 girls. The birthdate for
Thomas was taken from information on a 1920 census that stated he was 57 years old. I don't know who his parents were, but we do know from the same census record that his father was bron in GA. We also have information that leads us in the direction of an Asa Carden. There is a family fable that Thomas either ran away with or was taken by gypsies (if you can believe that). His wife and children, except Corrine who died in 1887, are in the Easter 1907 photo which is on my website. Thomas moved the family to what is now Tyndal Air Force Base in Panama City, FL from Geneva, AL in 1902. After Vinnei died in 1933, Thomas' remarried a woman that Mother only remembers as "Granny Archer". I have a picture of her and Thomas that I'll post the next time I update the site, and I can send it to anyone who'd like to see it.

2) My g-grandfather was Thomas' oldest son Richard b. Feb. 27, 1881 in AL. He married Lucy Morris. They had six daughters and one son who died at apx. 6 months of age. They lived in the same area of what is now Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL until the government forced them and the rest of the settlers off to construct the base.

3)My grandmother was Richard's fifth daughter Mamie, b. Jan. 12, 1919. The infant son that died was her twin brother, and they were both ill as infants, and believe it or not, neither child was named. The boy has only been reffered to as "Little Brother" and my grandmother was called Baby. She got her name when their baby daughter, born (pronounced Fair-a-bee) Phariby a.k.a. Abbie, who was born 14 months later, began talking and Baby somehow became Mamie. Here's where this gets tricky. Mamie had 3 children, Willard I. Roberts, b. Aug.11, 1943, Richard Hollie McDougall b. Dec. 23, 1950 d. Oct. 18, 2000, and Janice Cile McDougall(my Mama) b. July 28, 1953. Mamie didn't raise my Mama or my Uncle Hollie, but her older sister
Vashtie did (long complicated story). "Granny" was Mama's aunt that raised her, and "Mother" is my actual Grandmother.

4) Me, Brandi Barnes,

From: <MagL64@aol.com>

My name is Margaret Lee DuPont. Brandi and I are from the same line of Cardens.  Thomas Bartholomew Carden was my Ggrandfather.

My Grandmother,  Julia Dorthea (Dothy) Carden b.Nov. 13, 1888 d.March 1983 in Panama City, Fl., was one of Thomas and Vinnie's seven children.   She married. James Daniel Lee b. January 1890 d. 1954 in Panama City, Fl. (their marriage date unknown).  My father was Richard  Marvin Lee,  their 1st child, b. Feb. 19, 1907 d. March 1988 in Panama City, Fl.

One of Thomas and Vinnie's daughters, Lillie married William (Will) Lee, a brother to James D. Lee.  Children from these marriages (Dothy& James and Lillie & Will )are "double first cousins".

I also have quite an extensive list of Thomas and Vinnie's  decendents, down to my Ggrandaughter who would be 6th generation.  If anyone is interested, or if this gets to any of "our" Carden line.

I am researching the family of John Carden and Catherine Jane Davis, they were married in Buckingham Co., Va on November 25, 1791, and have 6 children. The family moved to Jasper Co., Georgia circa 1800 and migrated into Pike, Paulding, Fayette, Monroe, Cobb and Spalding and several more counties in Georgia. Some of the family then migrated west into Alabama, Texas and California. My great grandparents, on my mothers side were both Cardens, one married an Atkins from Georgia and the other a Blisit (various spellings). My grandparents were 1st cousins. Some surnames include IVY, RICHARDS, ROBERTS, BLISIT, CARTER, CAMP, WILLOUGHBY, ABBOTT, CARROLL, COLLINS, and BARKSDALE. It seems there is a connection with almost anyone who was in NW Georgia.
We have documented proof of a David Carden fighting in the war of 1812 and several family members fighting in the war between the states, better known as "The Civil War." If you can add anything or would like more information feel free to contact me.
If my email does not work try again more than likely the box is full and I have not had time to check it.

I have heard there were seven Carden boys who came from Ireland together but do not know who they are. Also, we have not been able to go up from John in Goochland Co., Va. We have found several Carden/Cardin in Goochland but have not been able to make a connection. I have about 700 Cardens and Affiliates in this line.

1. JOHN1 CARDEN was born Abt. 1770 in Virginia (probably Goochland County), and died Aft. 1850. He married (1) CARTHA JANE DAVIS November 25, 1791 in Buckingham Co., Virginia. She was born Unknown in Virginia, and died Unknown. He married (2) ELIZABETH Abt. 1840. She died Unknown.
Children of JOHN CARDEN and CARTHA DAVIS are:
2. i.   DAVID2 CARDEN, b. Abt. 1793, Goochland Co., Virginia; d. September 28, 1869, Pike Co., Georgia.
  ii.   ELIZABETH A. CARDEN, b. Abt. 1795; d. Unknown.
iii.   BENJAMIN CARDEN, b. Abt. 1800; d. Unknown.
3. iv.   MARY A. CARDEN, b. Abt. 1804, Jasper Co., Georgia; d. Aft. 1860, Pike Co., Georgia.
4. v.   JOHN CARDEN JR., b. Abt. 1806, Jasper Co., Georgia; d. Aft. 1850.
5. vi.   ANDREW JACKSON CARDEN, b. Abt. 1814, Jasper Co., Georgia; d. Aft. 1880, Liberty Hill, Pike Co., Georgia.

Child of JOHN CARDEN and ELIZABETH is:
vii.   ELIZA A.2 CARDEN, b. Abt. 1842, Georgia; d. Unknown.

The thing I have noticed with most of our Cardens is the nose.  I am 6'4" and both brothers are over 6'.  My mother is 5'8" and my sister 5'8".  I was always told our height came from the Atkins.  My grandfather is 5'6"-5'8" and I have one uncle the same
size.  Mom said she thought are Cardens were short and plump.  The other 2 uncles are 6' and over.  Well enough already.....  Our line is

John Carden b circa 1770 m Catherine Jane Davis 11/25/1791 in Buckingham Co., VA.  They had 6 children.

Andrew Jackson Carden b abt. 1814 in Jasper Co., Georgia, m Adeline Crawford 3/4/1838 in Pike Co., Georgia.  They had 8 children.

Henry Carden b circa 1852 in Pike Co., Georgia, m Marion Blisit.  They had 7 children.

David Jackson Carden b 4/10/1874 in Monroe Co., Georgia m Amanda Ada Hinman 8/26/1900 and Opal Azilia Smith 1/19/1920.  He had 6 children with Amanda and 2 with Opal (after Amanda passed away.)

Ollie David Carden b 11/07/1906 in Rome Co., Georgia, m Maggie Rene Atkins 4/15/1936.  They had 6 children (2 died in infancy).

Alpha Joyce Carden b ( private) in Dawson Co., Texas, m James D. Collins.  They had 5 children (1 died at birth).

Michael Collins b ( private) in Hopkins Co., Texas, never married and no children.

O.H.R., or Owen N.K., Carden was born in 1820 in Ga., and was in Pike Co. Ga., as early as 1837, and left sometime after 1850, and came to Tallapoosa Co. Al., and then he died during the Civil War.  His wife, Nancy McLeod Carden, was in Randolph Co. Al., in 1870, and then she was in Chambers Co. Al. in 1880, and after that we don't know what
happened to her!

My Grandfather was born in Chambers Co. Al. and my Dad was also.

Raymond Andrew Bell, born 1929 in Georgia, married Irene Elizabeth Knespel

Charlie Andrew Bell, born 1907 in Georgia, married Ethel Croft

Amos Cardin, born 1874 in Tennessee (this man changed his name from Cardin to Bell when he left Tennessee and moved to Georgia...not known why, perhaps a little altercation with the law??), married Lula Freeman

Andrew C. Cardin, born 1846 in Tennessee, married Roseanna Matilda Fortner

Amos Cardin, born circa 1825 in Tennessee, married Margaret N. Taylor

Leonard Carden, born circa 1785 in Virginia, married (1) Tabitha Peace (my grandmother) and (2) Synthia Hanson

I'm not sure when the spelling of the name changed.  Even today I have Cardin relatives who spell it both ways.  I have an idea who Leonard's father is, but can not prove it.  If anyone has proof, I would love to hear about it.

I don't remember who was discussing the height of the Cardens, but I have brothers who are 6'5", 6'4" and 6'2".  I guess we got the tall genes.  My Cardens tend to be fair with striking blue eyes

Sarah's father, Benjamin Franklin Cardin, born 1822 in Henry county Ga. died in Henry county in 1910. He married Manerva Kelley in Henry county in 1851. She died in 1860 and he married Pernelia Phillips. This is all I have so far
on my Cardin line. I'm still looking. I think his father might have been a James Cardin who was in Henry county but I haven't connected them as yet.

There were two more generations of James Carden's and then the line seemed to die out.
James 1820-1897 came from Ballina Co Mayo.
My interests are the Cardens of the Ballina area and also any descendants who may surface in this country.
I am pleased to hear from any Ballina/ NY, PA, Carden types.

I'm still trying to track down the parentage of my great-grandmother, Maria Carden, born in Ireland and an immigrant to western New York. Inquiries to the various family search organizations and parishes in Tipperary and Galway have not met with any success as yet.

1.      Unknown... New Inn? Newinn? Cashel? Tipperary or Galway? Family
tradition has always been this was Sir John Craven Carden, 4th Bt., of
Templemore, but this is not born out by peerage or local parish records.
Children:
     2.     i      Maria Carden b. 27 Aug 1847.
     3.     ii     Alice Carden b. __ ___ c1854.
iii     Elizabeth Carden. Elizabeth Carden Lloyd was the sister of Maria Carden Hevenor.

Second Generation

2. Maria Carden b. 27 Aug 1847, New Inn, Ireland, m. 03 Mar 1870, in St. Peter's Episcopal, Philadelphia, PA, Richard Hevenor, b. 5 Feb 1841, Kilchreest, County Galway, Ireland, (son of Charles George Hevenor and Margaret Gloster) d. 9 Feb 1922, Salamanca, New York. Maria died 3 Aug 1928, Salamanca, New York.

She and Richard Hevenor were childhood sweethearts. She emigrated to America, entering at Philadelphia soon after Richard had established himself in Salamanca. Richard met her in Philadelphia and they married March 3, 1870 in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. St. Peter's reports the "witness" was J. Bernard W. Carden Jr., which I interpret to be two witnesses, one of whom was W. Carden, Jr. I have no clue who he might have been.

3.      Alice Carden b. __ ___ c1854, Ireland, m. 28 Oct 1878, in Salamanca, New York, Charles S. Hevenor, b. __ ___ c1854, New York. Alice died 1928.

I am descended from Maria Carden, born 27 Aug 1847, perhaps in "New Inn", Ireland, died 3 August 1928, Salamanca, New York, where she is buried in Wildwood Cemetery.  She emigrated to Philadelphia, probably in 1868 or 1869, and married Richard Hevenor, her "childhood sweetheart", in St. Peter's Episcopal Church on 3 Mar 1870.  They lived in Salamanca, New York, where Richard and his brother ran a successful mercantile business.  Maria had at least two sisters, Alice, b. CIR 1854, and Elizabeth, who married someone named Lloyd.  We currently think they were the children of John M. Carden, b. CIR 1805, from what Arthur Carden labels the "Killard Cardens" of Ireland.

Attribution of Maria (and her sisters) to the family of John M. Carden is based on a single piece of evidence at this time [2001] and certainly needs to be verified.  On 8 Aug 1898, Thomas Watson, of New Zealand, whose mother was a Carden, wrote a letter to his cousin, William Condell Carden.  In the typescript copy of the letter, there are two references to a daughter of John M. Carden in America, once as "Mrs. Neveron" and again as "Mrs. Neveror".  Both Maria Carden and her sister Alice married men named "Hevenor".  It now appears the transcriber of the letter mistook the spelling of "Hevenor".

Another question at this time is the identification of the witnesses listed on Maria's marriage certificate, William P. Carden and Mary E. Carden, in Philadelphia.

Orange/Alamance County areas of N.C
My husband Clark Fred Carden, Jr. and I have looked at the photos and he does resemble one of the Carden men shown there vis-a-vis the nose (LOL) and the hairline. Fred is about 6' 2" tall and his son is a WHOPPER at 6' 6" with the same nose.  My husband has the blue-gray eyes as well as red tints in his hair and beard.  No signs of gray or receding hairline either.  His father, Clark Sr., had a full head of auburn hair when he passed away at age 61 and was over 6' tall himself.   As
for occupations my husband is very mechanically inclined with jobs in auto, boat and textile machinery maintenance.  His grandfather John W. Carden was a Baptist minister.  One oddity:  My husband developed premature cataracts when he was in his teens.  He had them removed when in his 40's.  Has any other Carden experienced this?
I am sure my husband connects to asome of the the posted ancestors but we only can verify his grandparents, John W. and Tobitha Jane Elmore Carden and his great grands, William M. and Demarius Overman Carden.  His Cardens are in the Orange/Alamance County areas of N.C.  We are always on the lookout for more connections.

William M. Carden b. circa 1820-1825  d. before 1880 as he is no longer with his wife in the Orange County Census for that year.  William married Demarius Overman daughter of John O. and Mary "Polly" Overman.  Demarius b. 1846  and d.
10-24-1933. She and William were married 12-11-1861.  Their burial place is unk. to us at this time.  William and Demarius had the following children:
Lizzie E. b. 1874
Mary M. b.1871
Robina F. b. 1873
Catherine F. b. 1876
Nancy A. b. 1863
Thomas J. b. 1866
James Ira b. 3-31-1869
John W.  b. 12-24-1864  d. 12-16-1944
John W. Carden (above) m. Tobitha Jane Elmore b. 1-10-1870  d. 12-23-1946
They got a marriage license in Alamance County on 10-26-1890.  They are both buried at Lebanon UMC Cemetery on the Orange/Alamance Counties line. John and Jane as she was known had the following children:
Clark Fred Carden, Sr. b. 4-2-1906 d. 11-27-1967  buried also at Lebanon.  m. Dorothy Dorine Pattishall
Carrie Carden m. W. Pruitt
Gattis "Gad" Carden m. Vergie C____.
Lacy "Lace" Carden (M) m. Lillian   ?
Polly Carden m. Ralph Holt
There is also suppossed to be a son, Tommy Carden who died young but it is odd that if he existed that he is not buried at Lebanon with his parents.  BTW John W. was a Baptist minister but is buried in a Methodist cemetery.

Clark Fred Carden, Sr. (above) had two chldren with his wife Dorothy Dorine Pattishall.  They are:
Clark Fred Carden, Jr.  b. (private)  m. Cheryl Patricia Staley  in Alamance County N.C.
Debra Lynn Carden m. Gary Spivey.
Fred, Jr.  has son by first wife.  He is Kenneth Clark Carden I  m. Amy Kathleen Eldred  in Alamance County N.C.
Ken and Amy have 3 kids:
Kenneth Clark Carden II
Kelsey Nicole
 Kathleen Melissa  "Katey"

I noticed on your site that there was a Carden female who married a man with the last name Gattis, the same as the first name of my husband's uncle. It is such an unusual name that I think there has to be a genealogical connection between that line of Cardens and my husbands but I have not been able to link them together.  Also the last name Gattis is a common surname for African Americans in our area and that may be where he got his first name.  I just don't know.

I am still trying to determine which Robert CARDEN was in Grainger Co, TN, in the 1830 and 1840 censuses.  This Robert CARDEN was too young (by census ages) to have been Robert CARDEN, b. abt. 1742, whose 2nd wife was
Elizabeth ROBARDS.  The ages of Robert and his wife match those of Robert CARDEN, b. 1763 and his wife, Lockey HUNT, b. 1766, who were married 4 Jan 1787 in Mecklenburg Co, VA, and may have been the Robert CARDEN & family
who were in the 1810 Stokes Co, NC census.  I don't know where they were in 1820.  Two Robert CARDENs continue to be confused in various genealogies that I have seen.  One was the son of John CARDEN, b. 1731 in Mecklenburg Co, VA, and the other was the son of John CARDEN, b. abt. 1740 and his wife, Mary SUGGS.  Because John CARDEN and Mary SUGGS were married abt. 1771, in Goochland Co, VA, it is more reasonable to assume that Robert CARDEN, b. 1763, was the s/o John CARDEN, b. 1731 in Mecklenburg Co, VA, but I do not know for sure.
