Location: The Lovelady Cemetery is located in the southern portion of Putnam County. From Highway 136 heading south (towards White County) turn right on Lovelady Road (approxiamately 5 miles south of  the intersection of I-40 and Highway 136;  about 1/2 north of where Highway 136 and Highway 111 merge). Go about 1 mile to 1.5 up Lovelady Road. The cemetery is mostly on the left, but there are a few graves to the right of the road.

Sarah A. Sherrell, wife of Jacob Sherrell, born 1817, died 19 Oct. 1883, age 66
J. S. Sherrell, born 26 Oct. 1819, died 26 Apr 1886 (stone broken)

Dr. Foster refers further to teachers at Liberty prior to 1851, naming Joseph Perryman, A. M. Jones, Robert Yeargin, and Mr. Woodward. The last named remained only a short while.
The writer recalls these later teachers: W.D.G. Carnes, John Truitt, Miss Cynthia Fuston, Miss Hattie Woodside, Mrs. Thomas Adamson (from Iowa), Rev. D. P. Searcy, John F. Roy, Horace M. Hale, Miss Callie Sneed, W. D. Gold, Miss Sallie Coward, W. A. Barger, John Bryan, Miss Amelia Bryan, Hood and Baker (from the North), Jones and Renick, Mr. Friece (from the North), Rev. James Turner, Thomas Turner, Professor Paschal, Miss Stevens, S. B. Sherrill, Alona Gossett, Robert Smithson, Professor Rose, Professor Crewes, E. W. Brown, J. H. Killman, and Matt Bratten. The teachers in 1914 were: Horace L. Smith, principal; Misses Gene Crowley and Bessie Saunders, assistants; and Miss Mildred Mathis, music teacher.

Capt. Robert Cantrell's company (C) recruited around Smithville, became part of the Twenty-third Regiment of Tennessee Confederate Infantry. its commander was later elected lieutenant colonel. G. W. Hicks was elected colonel and later Erastus D. Foster. Other promotions were of Lieuts. W. D. Rhinehardt, Lawaon W. Lee, and A. P. Cantrell. The company saw service in Virginia and at Shiloh. After fighting at Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge, and going through the Georgia campaign, it was at Franklin and Nashville and surrendered in North Carolina. Capt. John C. New, of Cannon County, writes: "After the Twenty-third had served about twelve months, it was reorganized. At this time Captain Cantrell was elected lieutenant colonel, but soon resigned. Ras Foster was elected captain of the company, and after serving some time he left and carried many of his men with him. The company was consolidated with mine. Zeb Lee was a member of the company and lost a let at Chickamauga. His brother, Lieut. Lawson Lee, was killed." Colonel Cantrell was for several years a distinguished circuit judge of Tennessee, residing a Lebanon. He was born November 9, 1823, and died February 9, 1903.

5342 - 1865 Sept. 5 - Petition to sell land. William C. RICE of Wilson Co., TN against the unknown heirs at law of Elizabeth GATES, non resident of state. Orators father Benjamin RICE, died about 2 years ago, intestate in this county. He owned a small tract of 100a in Civil District 23 bound by Samuel SHERRELL, by the farm which Newton SHERRELL now lives, Lara HARALSON, on which dec'd. lived at time of his death. He left no widow surviving him and his only heirs at law your orator, his son, and two children whose names and ages are unknown to your orator, the children of a dau. of the intestate whose name is Elizabeth, but who married (blank) GATES several years ago and moved with him to MO and there died leaving two or more minor children.

5348 - 1855 Aug. 6 - (O.B.) John ROLLS against Anderson SHERRILL citizen of TX and Johnathan F. HOOKER, admr. of Archbl SHERRILL, dec'd. citizen of Wilson County. Orator and Anderson SHERRILL were partners in the tanning business in town of Rome TN. They closed their business in June or July 1852 ... a short time after partnership settlement, And SHERRILL moved to TX, where he now resides. Sometime in 1855 the father of Anderson, Archibald SHERRILL, died intestate in this county leaving land and negroes ... Johnathan F. HOOKER, admr....

Pioneer Settlers
From the best information we have been able to obtain, the first permanent settlement in the county was made about the year 1794. The next settlement, it is thought, was made on the waters of Spring creek, about eight miles south from the site of Lebanon, about the year 1796.
Much about the same time, if not before, settlements were made on Barton's Creek, on Smith's Fork, on Cedar Lick, on Stoner's Creek, and perhaps in other localities.  We present here the names of a goodly number of the pioneers of

residents of The State of Tennessee, and reside in the State of Lousiana, &
Franklin Stephens who resides in the State of Mississippi, Garland Huffman and
wife who reside in Texas & David Weaver who resides In Mississippi, are all
non-residents of the State of Tennessee And reside in the above named States.
So as the ordinary process of this Court Court cannot be served upon them it
is therefore ordered by the Clerk & Master, that publication be made for Four
Successive weeks in the Bedford Yeoman a newspaper published in the Town of
Shelbyville Tennessee Requiring the Said non-resident defendants to appear at
the next Term of the Court to be held at the Court House in the town of
Shelbyville on the first Friday after the 4th Monday in August next and plead,
Answer, or Demur to Complainants Bill or the Same will be taken for Confessed
and set for hearing Exparte, as to them.

       Be it remembered that
his cause came on for hearing this 4th day of August 1854 before the Hon.
Broomfield L. Ridley Chancellor upon bill answer and pro confesso order.  And
it appearing to the satisfaction of the court from the pleadings in the cause
that David Weaver departed this life intestate some time ago leaving the
parties named in the original bill as his only heirs at law being ten children
and their representatives and it also appearing that he was the owner of a
small tract of land containg fifty acres as set out in the pleadings and that
Zepheniah Weaver is his administrator and it also appearing from the
allegations of the bill and the answers of defendants Green & Wife and the pro
confesso order as to David Weaver George Sherrill and wife more than the value
of the land will make up to the other heirs--and to Murphy Nutt & wife at
least $75 by their answer, and that they do not desire to have their
advancements collated and that the said land will have to be sold for
partition amgst. the other heirs and distributors of David Weaver decd. It is
therefor ordered, and judged and decreed by the court that the clerk and
master proceed and sell the tract of land described in the bill, that he sell
it upon the premises first giving thirty days notice of the time and place of
sale on a credit of one and two years except the sum of fifty dollars to pay
costs requiring interest on the other payments from date of sale and report
his proceedings in the next term of this court untill which time all other
matters are reserved.

       Be it remembered that
this cause came on for further and final hearing before the Honl. B.L. Ridley,
Chancellor & c this the 4th day of September 1857 upon Bills, Answers, proof,
and the other proceedings heretofore had in said cause-And it appearing to the
satisfaction of the Court that David Weaver had advanced in his life time to
his daughter Sarah Lassiter the sum of fifty dollars, to Complainant Zepheniah
Weaver the sum of fifty dollars, to his daughter Lucretia Sherrill the sum of
fifty dollars in twenty acres of land, to Murphy Nutt and wife Fanny about
seventy five dollars, and that he had paid as security for his son David
Weaver about $200.  It is therefore ordered and decreed by the Court that sd.
Sums be charged to those who received them respectively as advancements.  It
further appearing to the Court that A.J. Green & wife Irena have been advanced
their full share, and do not claim any part of the estate.  It further
appearing to the Court that there are still debts outstanding against the
estate of said David Weaver decd. To be paid by the Administrator.  It is
therefore ordered and decreed by the Court that whenever Complaint. as
Administrator shall have made his settlement with the Judge of the County
Court of Bedford County, the Clerk & Master of this Court pay over to sd.
Administrator so much of the money in his hands arising from the sale of the
land as shall be according to sd. settlement necessary to pay the balance of
the debts of said estate and necessary expenses.  It is further ordered and
decreed by the Court that after deducting the costs of this cause, except the
costs of the bill of Complainants vs. Sarah Lassiter-and after collecting and
charging the advancements aforesaid, said Clerk & Master pay over the balance
of sd. money in his hands to the heirs and distributees of said David Weaver
decd. Or their Attorney’s in fact, as follows–
To complainant Zepheniah Weaver one share, to Lucretia F. Sherrill one share,
to Abner Moss and wife Jenny one share, to Sarah Lassiter one share, to Polly
Green wife of Janson Green one share, to Franklin Stephens, only child of
Betty Stephens one share, to Polly Keer wife of Thomas Keer [Carr], David
Weaver, John Weaver, and the other children and distributees of Saml. Weaver
decd. Named in the original Bill, jointly, one share, to Fanny Nutt wife of
Murphy Nutt, one share of said money, and to David Weaver, son of sd. David
Weaver decd. One share.  It is further ordered and decreed by the Court that
said Clerk is not to pay those of sd. distributees who have received fifty
dollars or upwards by way of advancement any portion of sd. money until those
who received nothing are made equal to them.  Nor is he to pay anything to
those of sd. distributees who are charged with more than fifty dollars each as
advancements until all the others receive a sufficient sum each to make them
equal.  It is further ordered & decreed that the costs of the Bill above
referred to against Sarah Lassiter shall be paid by the sd. Zepheniah out of
his individual funds unless the Judge of the County Court shall allow him the
same on the settlement with him.
